Newest addition to WinCustomize!
Published on January 28, 2009 By Island Dog In WinCustomize News

It’s been a while since we added a new gallery to WinCustomize, and today I’m happy to announce the addition of the Desktop Gadgets gallery!  The Desktop Gadgets gallery are for stand-alone gadgets that are created with DesktopX Pro

The advantage to these gadgets over widgets, is that they do not require DesktopX to be installed, and can run on virtually any Windows XP or Vista desktop.  The ability to export gadgets like these are well worth upgrade to DesktopX Pro.

So go check out the new gallery, and thanks goes to RomanDA for helping to get the gallery stocked for launch.

*Note* – If you already have gadgets in the DX Widget category, and would like them moved to this gallery, just drop me a PM.

Not for me Wom, it vanished yesterday and is still gone.. anyone else having this prob?

on Jan 30, 2009

Only thing on the right side under galleries is DX Objects, Themes and Widgets.  The only reference to gadgets is Google Gadgets at least on my home page.

on Jan 30, 2009

I stand corrected, its gone for me also.  I still see it in the mod section.  Hum.

First let me answer about the gallery link:

Clear Cache and cookies on your browser close it then open it and login in.

Then on the right(or left) side there are on top of the galleries links a button called "Edit" click on it and press show all (or be sure DesktopX Gadgets is enable) and save. It should be visible now.

Yeah, and a lot of people would like some of those Widgets, made into Gadgets

Sub idea

you can always create a zip with your widget and his gadget version then upload this zip under widget's gallery

. The Gadget gallery is for Gadgets, why would I want to upload my Gadget as a Widget.. then again, the Bird Mail that took me 3 hours to make was moved to the personal gallery.. I don't know what you folks want, I'm not a rocket scientist.. but it seems like anything we average folks submit will be knocked back anyway, if it isn't the equivilent to something NASA created.

How is that meant to inspire someone to keep trying, when our first thought now is.. Why bother... they will reject it.. it's like.. you're stuffed before you start , and no.. I am not complaining, I'm stating my thought's.

angus is spot on, people who don't have DX may want the simple thing's they see in the Widgets section, yet they can't get them now, because all of our 'simple Gadgets' will be rejected.

Edit: Why is the Gadgets Gallery link not on the main site anymore? just curious, the only link to it, is in ID's News topic.

Tailsgirl, we are talking about a gallery for gadgets using uniques designs and scripts (at least some things really outstanding, uniques, with improvement)

This doesn't mean you (general) will need to create NASA thingies to get them allow to be public and not personal pages. This mean you'll have to create something really new, showing what we can do with DX.

You (Tailsgirl) i know loves clocks for example, so i'll take an example: a simple clock using a simple pluggin won't be allowed, if you want your clock allowed it'll need to be new, interresting and unique... like a skinnable clock, or a clock that show you when you ask it the time all around the world, this was new ideas.

Why i talk about make a zip with both gadget and widget version of a creation and upload them under the widget gallery is cause if you (general) want to share your creation to those who don't have DX installed but this creation doesn't feet for anycase the lines expected to be public under gadget's gallery, it's a good idea. I've for one done it several times and i'm not alone.

This gallery has been asked for years to show off what we can do with DX. But it doesn't  mean clocks, calendars, weathers,... won't be allowed in, just they will need to be interesting or/and outstanding or/and new or/and improved....

I wish you'll understand the point.

Side note about this:

Why bother... they will reject it.. it's like.. you're stuffed before you start , and no.. I am not complaining, I'm stating my thought's.

Ask WOM or other "old" mods they'll tell you it, when i begun here i "created" stuff using someone else scripts and didn't get the picture the first time they reject my skins (mostly cause of language mater, i didn't understand anything in english) but i tried to understand why and they helped me to understand. Did i gave up? no no way! I learned, improved my skills, tried new things... And now i can tell i'm able to create almost anything for any galleries here.

My point here is this: If you really want to grow up, to improve yourself and your skills you'll do it whatever will be on your way.

If your stuff get rejected ask why and then listen the answer and learn from it.

If it get put on your personal page it doesn't meant it's bad or that you are without skills but that you need to learn more and improve your skills.

If it's allowed, cool but you may need to keep improving your skills unless you are a god/ess, and every master here will tell you they aren't gods and they learn everyday.

my 2 cents

I could try some of your suggestions, thanks for those!

Oh.. just in case people can see the link, this is what I get.

I know i started this mess and i want to comment on what i see here.  I have been a member here for well over 5 years.  If you want a laugh go back and look at what i started with, lets see.. CLOCKS.. lots of them, and i did the same things over and over.  I took and put a graphic and used the plug-in and i thought i was rocking DX.  I tried to make one that changed colors, and i started by making multiple png's and had them change states (like i have shown with a tutorial).  This was thanks to MARTIN and his patience with me.  This clock ended up being well over 6 mb for a stupid clock.  So then i learned more about DX and found that i could make 2 pngs do the work of 12.  A dark gray one, and a RED one.  This allowed me to use things like hue/saturation/color to make just about ANY color in the world.  So moved on from there.  And YES i have had numerous things rejected.  Way back then it was cool to get that email that said my latest masterpiece was "approved".  It took me about 3-4 "version" of the Chrome-Dome widgets before they were acually worth really being uploaded.

I then found the "plugin" for my cpu/hard drive etc.  And started to play with that.  Again using built in DX items.  I worked and worked my ass off learning dx.  When i started there was MARTIN, and TIGGS, and thats about it.  And trying to learn DX was near impossible, the "tutorials" were not useable at all, and so most of what i leaned was by taking others work, seeing how the crap they did what they did, and then trying to make changes.  It was NOT a great way to do things, but hell i had no choice.

I took me over 2+ years to try my first REAL DX "PROGRAMMING" - Sport Strip.  This thing used clones, it read rss feeds, it used scrolling, it used well over 1500 lines of CODE to make it work.  And in the process of making this i learned the most importent lesson ever with DX - SAVE SAVE SAVE.  After losing ALL of that code, and having to re-create it ALL, i learned so much more about how to code.  And every time i start on a new project i try and expand my skill set even more, with things no one else has tried, or in a way that no one else has done.  HC Pro was well over 3000 lines of CODE, doing things NO ONE had tried before, and I know i speak for VAD when i say that DX is SOOOOO MUCH MORE than some clock program that you can make "your own", it is with our a DOUBT the most amazing underrated, under untilized and under exploted programs on the market.

So when i see "ELITEST" and all the BS griping about "whats the point of trying" it makes me want to puke.  Do like the rest of us did, sViz, Vad, Tiggs, Martin, and all the others that have made use of DX's amazing abilities (sorry if i missed anyone, im typing fast here).  Make things, post them to the widgets gal (add gadgets to in the zip if you want) learn how to script.  ITS NOT HARD, it just takes time and effort.  I have spent so much time trying to help, trying to make it easier for the new DX super skinner out there to learn from MY mistakes, and from my tutorials so they can make things that make what i do look like toys.

When you put as much time into something as has been put into the DX "GADGETS" that are in this gallery, and you have had to spend... WEEKS looking on google, for a way to read that WMI string, or after a month of work gets completly blown away and you have to start over, and YOU upload it, only to have 22 clocks push it 3 pages back in 2 days, than you will be one of the ELITE, and will know why the rest of us are so adiment about this Gallery.. which i have personally spent well over 2 years BEGGING Stardock/WC (and i mean begging) for for this exact reason (look for my posts there are LOTS of them)!

I am more than willing to help where and when i can.  I have given freely of many HUNDREDS of hours, doing tutorials (which take 3-5 hrs EACH), making scripts for others, taking someone elses DXPACK and makeing it WORK.

So if people want to think im an ASS for wanting this one little spot on WC to showcase all my FREGGIN hard work (and the HARD work of the other DX CODERS), then i think i have earned the RIGHT to be that ASS.

it shouldn't be a selective gallery for a certain class of skinner[s]..

It isn't.

Just as with wallpapers it is selective for a certain class of OUTCOME.

If whatever is submitted to whatever gallery which has content moderation is uninspiring it will likely go to one's personal page.  It won't be rejected outright, that is reserved for copyright issues and/or things that simply do not work/function as intended.

For a Gadget to be considered 'good' one of the first criteria is that it should function equally well on BOTH XP and Vista [ignoring W7 for the moment], unless the gadget is for something/some feature ONLY available on one OS and not the other/both.

Re reference to '3 hours'.....it's probably not wise to try to differentiate a skin's assumed 'quality' by the time spent on its creation.  The example would be that something like 3 hours would get you exactly no-where with skinning Windowblinds...or perhaps a shell theme for Litestep [both would be more in the region of 100s of hours].

Conversely some brilliant results [in skinning] can be had in minutes, so ultimately the time is meaningless.

On a side note...."this is something I chucked together cos I was bored" is the prime cause of a wall rejection [at least from the main gallery] as boredom isn't a source of creativity.  Invariably the results are as dull as the artist's tedium/ennui....

.....and listen to Dave [RomanDA] ....he tells it like it is....

on Jan 30, 2009

I was in the happiest mood I've ever been in today actually!

on Jan 30, 2009

that took over 3 hours to make.

While it may seem like a large amount of time, a master WB can take months, Walls can take days or weeks to perfect, DX objects can take days or longer Ask Vad_M, Il wager his Self skinning Clock took a huge amount of time to research and develop.

When I started, this Calendar took me 16 hours to make, now it would take me all of 5 minutes. While it is functional I realize by comparison to the Top dogs of DX, it is not exactly "innovative or stylish", nor would I expect it to get the same heralding as skins like Vad_M's clock. A skin I make now would be much more innovative and asthetically appealing, But back then I thought this was actually killer.

As with all the other skinners I have dealt with over the years and have experienced this myself.. my best advise is keep on learning and skin for yourself. With time and pratice, will come the skills to WOW the crowds.

I know the feeling HG.

My first real widget took longer than it should bu I as super proud of it.  Created a font, embedded itl.  Used the web control and sent it commands.  Good times.  (and while I wathced for every download for weeks . . I was jsut super proud to have created something new (for the time))

I think RomanDa is awesome,  and I wish I could be 1 tenth as good as he is, and I realize that takes time, so.. I'll continue to 'attempt' to create better thing's, and learn a little more about the coding side of thing's along the way hehe, I'm more use to PHP.

Luv ya guys

David, you are Magician! This is exactly a quintessence of my thoughts!

This is very bad when you work on a project during a long time (from weeks to years!). Then you may see how your gadget just disappears between the similar clones of clocks, weathers, etc... already in a few hours after uploading!

No doubt that anyone who bought DX have a right to make their own objects/widgets/gadgets. As well they may upload them here.

But seems a simple clock that uses DX plugin and takes ~ 1 hour for its creation is not the same that multifunctional DX gadget based on a complex script containing thousands of code lines!

These different things should be uploaded to the Separated Galleries and should not interfere to each other! I think it's time to solve this problem finaly.

We do try, even if the thing we create is graphically better looking, or 'asthetically pleasing to the eye', than something that has more complex coding, plugin or not, nothing wrong with that. .. the decision has already been made, and there's nothing really to talk about, it will be Moderated more heavily than the other galleries.. ok.. we get it.
