There's another thread here with some discussion about the sale, but I wanted to make a separate thread on what games you have picked, or ones you are hoping hits a good sale.

I like the Steam Wallet, because I drop $10 here and there and build it up for sales without putting a big dent in my wallet.

Picked up so far:

  • Borderlands 2 Season Pass - $10
  • Cart Life - $2 (random gifting)

Waiting for:

  • Assassin's Creed III
  • Tomb Raider

Picked up on Amazon, GamersGate, GMG, etc:

  • Euro Truck Simulator 2 - $10
  • BioShock Infinite - $24
  • Civ 5 Brave New World - $24

Be sure to add me on Steam: Island Dog

Hoping for:

Distant worlds pack with expansions/DLC
Dragon Age 2 pack with DLC

I saw a good tip in another thread that bears repeating here. When buying stuff on Steam, be sure to select it as "gift", not purchasing for yourself. You can still activate it for your own account, but if you never actually play the game you can give it away at a later date.

Speaking of gifts, I have a bonus copy of Don't Starve. If you're a regular on these forums and into solo survival games like Minecraft send me a PM. Will edit when the game is given away. Gone

Darn it HF. DA2 had a flash sale yesterday. If I had known, I would have PM'd you.

Is Distant Worlds 2 sold on Steam? I want it too, but I THINK it is only sold by Matrix games, if I recall correctly.

ID, which Tomb Raider are looking for? The latest one, or any of them in the series?

If I'm not mistaken, it is $18 on Amazon right now; I am assuming that it will be ~$15 after using the 15% off code.

Yep, Distant Worlds will probably never ever end up on Steam. Matrix Games has it locked down and only available through them... they did just have their one big sale per year after the release of Shadows, but I don't know if it's still going.

I picked up some adventure games that I have been wanting to play.  I think I payed less than 15$ for the three of them.

Amnesia: The Dark Descent

Dear Esther

The Dark Eye chains of satinav

Dark Souls, Risen 2 & Sonic Racing.

Wanted some games to play with the 360 controller.

I think the newest Tomb Raider is on sale for $12.50 on steam today.

Jack, have you played DW? I thought it was an IGOUGO TBS game, but it is pausable RTS. Is that 'the same' as an IGOUGO game (i.e.-just pause after the PC's turn? Do you have any experience with pausable RTS games? I think I don't like RTS (I never really played one, to be honest).

I do have it and all the expansions, and it is a great game in certain aspects, and annoying in others. It is a pausable RTS, but I really hesitate to put it in the same category as other "4x RTS" games like Sins of a Solar Empire. There are no turns, everything is simultaneous and there are no separate battle instances (like Sins), but where they differ is that Distant Worlds' pace is much slower. It is also many orders of magnitude more complex. Imagine Sins, but instead of single planets per system, solar systems with up to 50 habitable planets and moons. Then times the number of systems in an average Sins game by 100. Now combine that with an economy that doesn't use a shared pool of resources like Sins does, but every planet, star base and outpost has it's own stockpile of resources. Now imagine instead of 3 resources like in Sins, add 50 different types, and each type has a specific use in weapons, shields, engines, etc.

The good news is that the game has a very good automation system that you can pick and choose what areas you have manual control over. The AI does a really good job in it's automated abilities too. If you like, you can slowly wean yourself off of the auto control, but I'd say that's for "power users" only, or maybe for users that have been playing the game for a year. Distant Worlds allows you to focus on the areas you like best about managing a space empire. You can turn everything off except fleet control, and pretend to be a fleet admiral, defending your borders from pirates and space monsters.

It's a great game, and the sheer level of depth and replayability is amazing... but be prepared for a brick wall of a learning curve. The only gaming experience I can even closely compare it to would be Dominions 3. At first it will seem a bit overwhelming, but as you ease into it, it can be one of the best 4x experiences out there.

Thank you for your very thorough answer.

I have to admit I am wary of RTS games (I fear the twitch factor associated games like Starcraft...I'd rather play at my own pace). DW being a slower paced game speaks favorably to me...but the game and it's expansions are a little too steep for me to experiment .

What is your opinion of Endless Space, if you don't mind me asking? I understand it is like MoO2 but without personality/a soul.
