Vagary.tv has put up their review  Elemetal: Fallen Enchantress and gave it a 5/5!

“Elemental: Fallen Enchantress is the rare game that reaches in many directions, combining a vast array of different ideas, and combining them in a compelling and amazingly successful way.  Stardock was able to take the unfortunate circumstances surrounding the first Elemental game’s release and harness those lessons learned, constructing one of this year’s best strategy games. Hybrids are very difficult to make successful, as their systems tend to be shallow. Every portion of Fallen Enchantress is deep and well designed, resulting in a game that has RPG elements and strategy elements that are well worth a thorough exploration.”

Congrats to the team! I hope this drags metacritic towards a well deserved score, better than what it is now.

I do not think this site is relevant enough to show up on metacritic

and they are rather wrong ..

The game is OK right now but it's not 5/5.. it has the potential of being 5/5..

Yes, because opinions of others tend to be wrong, especially if they differ from ours.

You're probably right. And I actually don't like star based reviews on metacritic at all. They have to be rounded up to numbers with some odd formula which probably won't do justice to the system or the game. I wouldn't give 100 to FE, probably not to any game.

I loved the opening of this review.  I give it 5/5!

I (I'm the reviewer, hi!) wouldn't give any game 100/100 either. I'd prefer not to give scores to any game, mind you, but thems the breaks. Not a big fan of Metacritic... it puts too much emphasis on scores and too little on writing/criticism. Reduces game criticism to purchase validation (the game I bought was worth this many!) instead of actual criticism.

Nice Review! ... and you make a good point above.  A well written, incisive, and invested (in the sense of wanting to do the reviewer's job correctly) review is far more useful than a simple-minded numerical rating system.  I am probably just stating the obvious; but I am often appalled by the short-cuts people take in viewing/reviewing the world around us.  Thank goodness for the folks who take a deeper look, and try to convey what they see fairly/accurately.

Also, I liked your paragraph about the combat system, which I really think has been reviewed far too critically, by too many people.  I personally believe it is really very solid, given the overall nature of the game.  Fallen Enchantress is a 4X game, with a reasonable (better than one could expect!) RPG overlay -- it is not primarily a tactical combat game.  ( Get over it, people! )

Anyways, hope this comment doesn't sound like I am sucking up too much; but I really liked your review.  It was well written, and a pleasure to read ...

FE does not deserve a 5/5 rating. It's a good game, but 5/5 is reserved for the best of the best, which FE is not.

"Best" is a subjective criteria and tells us about the person expressing the point of view.

And, for that matter, many of the "best" games on metacritic I consider unplayable.  This one has room for improvement but is already great, in my opinion.

Edit: Personally, I do not assign numbers to my opinion. That said, currently, this is my favorite game to play.

on Dec 08, 2012

Would you give it a 5 out of 5?

on Dec 08, 2012

I'd give it a 7.5 out of 10.  If diplomacy ever gets improved and strengthened, balance issues dealt with, city growth possibilities made more distinctly, evenly good across the board, it might reach 8.5.  Could even hit 9, depending on what they add.  Time's early yet for this game.  It's good, but it's far from great in my opinion, with plenty of room for improvement.

wow that is an annoying post.. Why? because this was a statement and you did not add anything to the argument.

OK I'll play ball do you REALLY think this game is a 5/5?
