Stardock is excited to announce the release of the v1.3 update for Elemental: War of Magic.  Current customers can update to the latest version via Impulse, and this update includes a variety of updated features and fixes.

Full changelog is available here, but here are some highlights:

  • Economy tweaked and fix for out of control population
  • AI more reactive about updating strategy when a target city has been conquered / destroyed
  • Janusk has been removed. Goodbye old friend. See you in the Fallen Enchantress tutorial...
  • Modders can set the base cost of repeatable improvements in the appropriate .xml file
  • Special buildings now longer required to build special units. Instead, these buildings provide bonuses
  • Notable locations may now be explored regardless of your level.
  • New notable locations added to provide weapons, armor, and other "stuff"

Pelthin
Well this version has managed to just piss me off, once again.  I got taken and paid full price for a load of crap.  I really tried to not only like this game and company but defend both.  But after all this time, this game is still poo.

Just stop working on it and concentrate on a game that might be passable.  I am hoping that FE might be worth what I paid for this steaming pile.

However, as new versions are released for Elemental all I see are more features removed and the game play and stability seem to get worse.

I guess the only good thing I can say is, you as a company realized that you ripped us all off, and are willing to give us a 'new' game sometime in the future.  I can defend that, since most companies would just shrug and let it go at that.  So thanks for trying, but this is a losing battle, please ensure your next game FE is good, and stop even spending any time on this game.

Maybe I am just in a bad mood, but that is my feelings.

I'm affraid I have to agree here. Stop wasting resources in trying to fix this game and focus all your efforts on the new one. I loved the aspiration level when Elemental was announced, but now for stability reasons most of the features are cut out making the game lack atmosphere. With the money you save when not trying to fix this game I would even boldly suggest offering people who bought Elemental a fair discount on the new game.

edit: I praise your effort though stardock, many companies can take an example of you.

So far this has been the most stable version of WOM, (clean install with no mods)  that said the game is boring.

Exploring

Exploring is dead in WOM, no matter what map you play you are surrounded by AI players early on, limiting exploring and the removal of Boats also killed exploring the map. Island Maps just don't have any use. Add an underground passages like (Age of Wonder) or airship to travel over land/sea if your are going to remove boats and to make island maps playable.

Research

Random Research Gone, you are now forced to research the same things in the same order to each game to get more food or money, there is no randomness or breakthroughs. Add the ability to find research and scrolls during quests, add some randomness to what you get, food + 10, food + 25, food + 50, not the just the same thing again and again.

AI Factions

Have no flavor and are pretty much the same, add some personality to the AI leaders,

Quest/Adventures are boring

The game really needs something like a dungeon crawls, like caves, exploring ruins, lost city, etc. Use the tactical map has an area to explore with fog.

RPG Elements

There is very little interaction between family members, hero's, other factions. Add courting of other factions, ability to promote single troops into hero's. Add bribes, assassinations, kidnapping, ransom of hero's,  family members, etc.  Just look at Alpha Centauri for factional leaders with some personality. Add taunts from enemies, comments about your family, etc. Add city leaders.

Magic

Still sucks and is unbalanced, too weak early on, too powerful late in the game.

Caravan Guards

It sucks to have to reform caravans again and again.

Stop enemy caravans that keep showing up at your cities.

Roads

Stop roads from going through enemy territory

You can't seem to from new roads between cities.

So far my experience with patch 1.3 is mixed. On the one hand the game is much more stable. I get way less Out of Memory errors and crashes. There were some pretty radical changes in the game because of the way lower amount of hit points of units and heroes but I got through that. There's one thing however, which needs to be fixed ASAP; the prestige bug. In a normal game it's become nearly impossible to get even a level 4 city, because population grows slows to a crawl just like that.

This is my experience with 1.3, it runs incredibly well for 20 turns, then I get CTDs. I'm done with this, I'll wait for Fallen Enchantress, I've been a beta tester for far too long.

Okay, this was the last time I re-downloaded WoM. I wanted to like this game but now I clearly see it failed. Still boring, still empty, still childish, still unstable. Shame I paid for this game.

Oh I almost forget. With one of my heroe I went back to my city to rest. In spite there was enough food and resources in my kingdom all of my units disappeared from the city on the next turn when they became completely rested. Nice feature I'd say!

I'm not going to re-download this game ever! It is a waste of time for me, just as for Stardock by making patches.

Is the stupid ass combat finally fixed?

The game has been stable on my pc for some time, but the last time I played (one of the 1.2 iterations I think) my armored groups of soldiers with light weapons were being wiped out bij equally large groups of soldiers without armor with a slightly more damaging weapon (my guys had shortswords and theirs the spears thing you discover initially). My soldiers cost three times as much to build though and should at least be able to hold their own against soldiers with no armor and primitive weapons.

If the combat hasn't been fixed I'll wait for the enchantress thing. Hope that sucks less.

Alright, so now 1.3 is actually running really, really well for me. I'm not sure what fixed it, but something did. I've done a round of driver updates, virus scans, registry repairs, and I deleted my old saved games (my guess is that was it). Now it is running perfectly, no crashes so far after several games, although none in the 300+ turn range, so we shall see. I'm seeing some of the same bugs as other people, such as the weird torso thing with custom units.

Overall though, 1.3 has turned out much more stable for more than I originally thought. Very glad to see this.

Is there a way to get the update offline? Like downloading it on different pc or some thing?  Also looked in the log no work at all on the multiplayer what up with that?

on Aug 24, 2011

zalak1234, the 'offline' update method is 'impulse anywhere' that downloaded the ENTIRE  game that you then save onto a disc/stick and install and activate with impulse on the playing pc.
