Every day I visit tons of website, forums, and social networks for all types of topics, most of which are technology based in some sort of form.  This election cycle has really brought out the best of the liberal “group think” mentality regarding Obama.  On just about every social network Obama is praised as “the one” and any hint of disagreement with his policies or ideals is immediately responded with accusations of racism, or just plain insults.  Anybody who wants to claim that liberals are tolerant to others, please give me a shout because I can quickly debunk that.  Even here on our network of sites, there have been insults tossed at the slightest hint of either supporting McCain, or being against Obama.  I’m certainly not saying conservatives don’t dish out their fair share, but the mentality of liberals has once again bordered on the insane and hateful.

It’s tough being a proud conservative, as I will say what I think regardless of what the group and mob mentality is.  The real shame is so many people, especially bloggers in the tech area, are afraid to do the same.  I have received so many private notes and comments in support of standing up for conservatism, it’s almost crazy.  The best comparison I can make is how conservative actors in Hollywood are often ridiculed or turned down for roles because of their conservative beliefs, and the same mentality is going on right now in the blogosphere.  Conservative bloggers, some of which can be considered A-list are having to remain silent about their thoughts on Obama and McCain, simply because they are afraid of retribution from their employers or just not being able to pickup work from other sites.  It’s a shame, and it’s more telling about liberals than it is anything.

I am a conservative, I don’t like Obama, and I will never let anyone intimidate me because of that.

In the case of abortion, the courts have already decided, it's acceptable.

And if the courts decide murder is acceptable?  Yea, love your attitude!  If it feels good do it!

Abortion will always be an issue. There will never be a day when this issue will ever be settled. If you really want to understand why, then you need to try to understand it from both sides.

I do.  But I have a very low tolerance for bigots that refuse to try to even understand it from both sides.

It's easy to wear a flag pin and claim you're a patriot.

Equally easy to show respect for your country with a simple gesture.  Doesn't mean you agree with everything about it.

The court has no authority to make that decision. No man has the authority to make that decision.

Fortunately for the majority of Americans, the court has found that it IS the woman's decision. I respect your right to disagree, for whatever reason you deem sufficient. But, understand, it isn't going to change. That time has passed.

Tell that to a Judge.

Promiscuity and illigetimate births have skyrocketed since sex ed was introduced.

Tell that to the Palins.

Guess which family, the Palins or the Obamas, taught their kids the truth about human sexuality, rather than trying to bury it beneath the sand like an ostrich's head?

I'll bet hard currency that neither of Obama's daughters get pregnant as teenagers. Mark my words.

But seriously, how about you back up that ludicrous assertion with some cited studies or facts?

As for me, I'm going to turn to historical fact to prove to you that the "good old days" are a lie.

In older days, like less than a century ago, women got married and pregnant as soon as they passed through puberty, 12-14. This was because infant mortality was horribly high and because child-bearing women rarely survived past their mid-twenties.

Divorce was almost non-existant because everyone DIED a lot, leaving women and men who were lucky enough to live into their 70's widows and widowers three or four times over.

So, divorce has taken the place of death in modern society because we have longer life expectancies, and we now tell teenagers (who've been having sex since puberty since the dawn of time - because that's the way "god created them") that we've arbitrarily decided that they're not allowed to foll around anymore.

Why? Because it makes some very ignorant and self-righteous prudes and zealots uncomfortable.

Nah, I'm sticking with the 21st century on this one, thanks.

@Excalpius:  So very correct!

Nor does it mean you disagree with it in every way if you don't make that gesture all the time.

Abortion will always be an issue. There will never be a day when this issue will ever be settled. If you really want to understand why, then you need to try to understand it from both sides.

I am guessing the two sides are "pro-choice" and "pro-life".

Sadly, there is a third side which not many consider: God's side.

Jer. 1:5-Before I formed thee in the belly I knew thee; and before thou camest forth out of the womb I sanctified thee, and I ordained thee a prophet unto the nations.

According to those who are pro-life, life begins at conception. According to God, life begins BEFORE conception. In fact, God has a purpose for each individual before they're ever conceived. It's hard to argue with that.

I've been on both sides of this issue in my life.  I was pro-life back in my Christian days.  When I exchanged my faith for reason, I applied reason to this issue, too.  Abortion is illegal in Mexico, and women die because of it every day--because they have illegal abortions, and when it gets botched, they can't go to the hospital without being arrested and found guilty of murder, so the "law" results in the death of both the fetus and the woman.  That's why our Supreme Court voted to legalize abortion--because ILLEGAL abortion doesn't STOP abortion, it just makes it less professional and more unsanitary.

As far as God's side is concerned, if you do a careful search of the Bible, you'll find abortion is not contained anywhere in it.  The closest that the Bible comes to addressing abortion is Exodus 21:22-25 "If men strive, and hurt a woman with child, so that her fruit depart from her, and yet no mischief follow: he shall be surely punished according as the woman's husband will lay upon him; and he shall pay as the judges determine. And if any mischief follow, then thou shalt give life for life, Eye for eye, tooth for tooth."

The Bible does not SAY that life begins before conception, just that God knew the prophet Jeremiah in the sense that He knows everything that's going to happen, because He's (supposedly) omniscient.  Life, according to God, the Bible, and Jewish tradition, from which Christianity claims to have it's roots, BEGINS when the fetus/neonate takes it's first breath, the breath of life. (my ex-husband is an ordained pastor, and I audited his seminary classes with him).  The Hebrew word for breath is also translated as spirit...the spirit enters the body at the first breath, "ruah."

Not that any of that matters, because if, as you say, life begins before conception, because God knows who is going to be born or not, then a fetus that is destined by it's mother to be aborted was no more a person than a blighted ovum, or a pseudo-pregnancy.

Actually it is very easy to argue with that.

But while I think anything regarding religion is a matter of personal choice and not up for "debate", rather than ignore your grenade in the middle of this discussion (like everyone else is), I'm going to throw myself on top of it.

I hope that you will start a separate thread if you are genuinely interested in discussing this issue.  Thank you.

Crap.  I posted before I read all the replies.  Sorry Excalpius...(I pushed you off of that grenade, picked it up in my chubby little hand and ran around like a chicken with it's head cut off).  I'm such a rube when it comes to the religious hot potatoes.

Haha, no worries.  You did a FINE job of rebutting there, with personal anecdotes and everything.

I survived Johnson being elected.  This too shall pass.

Congrats to Obama on an amazing campaign.  Certainly defied logic to me, but the folks have spoken for now & we'll see how he governs.

on Nov 05, 2008

Oh well. Obama won.

You know, I'm disappointed, but I don't feel as bad as I thought I would. I guess I'm more apathetic.

But like I said before, I didn't like McCain, either. Had he won, I don't think I'd really be that excited.
