MEDIA/DNC NICKNAME 'SCALITO' SEEN AS RACIALLY INSENSITIVE
Mon Oct 31 2005 08:42:57 ET

Before Judge Samuel Alito was even officially announced as President Bush’s next Supreme Court nominee, he met a wave of racial discrimination from numerous corners of the mainstream media and the Democrat Party. Because of Judge Alito’s conservative and Italian-American background he is often been compared to Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia, and has been nicknamed by the mainstream media "Scalito."

This morning, on CNN’s AMERICAN MORNING host Soledad O’Brien said, "we've heard the nickname ‘Scalito’…. which is of course combining the Scalia, Justice Scalia and Alito. Let’s talk a little bit about their similarities."

On CBS’EARLY SHOW host Harry Smith claimed: "[Our next guest] will be on to talk about Alito, who some people are calling ‘Scalito’ because of his close resemblance to Antonin Scalia at least ideologically."

Meanwhile, the Democratic National Committee sent out talking points this morning titled: "Judge ‘Scalito’ Has Long History Of States Rights, Anti-Civil Rights, And Anti-Immigrant Rulings." More from the DNC’s anti-Italian American talkers: "Alito is often referred to as ‘Judge Scalito’ because of his adherence to Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia’s right-wing judicial philosophy."

One outraged Republican strategist claimed, "If Alito were a liberal there would be no way Democrats and Washington’s media elite would use such a racially insensitive nickname. Italian-Americans should not have to face these types of derogatory racial slurs in 21st century America.

Perhaps the MSM and the liberals should quit talking the talk, since they are incapable of walking the walk. Italians may not be a race, but that is a bigoted and insensitive label that smacks of narrowmindedness.

They wouldn't be doing it if he was black, or a liberal.

Haven't you heard, liberals, democrats and the MSM have received their "as bigoted as you want to be" license. Only conservatives and republicans can have bigotry held against them. Just ask Jesse and Al.

Sure, the MSM are going to do every underhanded thing they can think of to make him out to be the next coming of Attila the Hun. An experienced judicial scholar with impeccable personal and professional credentials who has twice been confirmed to the Federal Bench by unanimous consent of the Senate scares the bejesus out of them. OMG, someone who might... be a fair judge and adhere to a strict interpretation of the constitution. No matter how they try to Bork the guy, my bet is he'll get confirmed.

Personally, I think Bush, after having the Miers pick so roundly drubbed, is challenging the conservative Republicans to put up or shut up with this one. He rightly considers the Democrats whiny bit players taking pot shots from the sidelines. Who knows, maybe he's been misunderestimated again & this was his tack all along. Maybe Rush, Will, Krauthammer, Kristol, Hannity & the rest were in on it from the gitgo - now there's a VRWC for the DU whackos to chew on.

Please tell me again how the media is not biased.

It isn't as if the MSM anointed him "Scalito". Lawyers appearing before him are the ones who started calling him this.

How exactly is this term derogatory or a slur? I would think conservatives would be fond of this name, considering it is roughly translated as "Little Scalia". Isn't Scalia the epitome of what conservatives want in justices?

How does pointing out similarities between them, make someone anti-Italian?

I'm really not trying to start a fight, I just think this is making a mountain out of a molehill. I'm confident there will be plenty of real issues to argue about regarding his nomination in the near future.

Error number 1. It is a combination of Scalia and Alito. And no, the lawyers did not start doing that. The DNC did. Do you need Tinactin for your tongue?

I realize it's a combination of the two names smart guy. I'm talking about the actual italian name "Scalito". In several languages "ito" is used as a diminuitive. "Scalito", would therefore mean "little scalia".

I know for a fact that that lawyers have called Alito this for years. My ex, a paralegal worked on an immigration case before the 3rd Circuit 4 years ago. They called him Scalito then. What's the earliest reference you have from the DNC using the term Scalito? Today? Do a little research.

Why dont you just call him a wop then? Hey Dumb guy?

And I know for a fact your ex is full of shit or you are. My Wife IS a paralegal. So get a life, and dont try to be so condescending to me in the future unless you want to battle wits.

When is not the issue. How is. Try getting a second opinion next time.

What does "little scalia" have to do with calling someone a "wop"? Little Scalia is derogatory int he same sense as wop?

Neither I, nor my ex is full of shit, and the fact that your Wife IS a paralegal proves nothing.

You are the one who said the DNC are the ones who started calling him Scalito. Stop trying to act tough and show me the first time the DNC used that term. You won't do that because you apparently don't like to use facts in arguments. You talk in generalities and then start getting all hostile and try to intimidate people who offer facts in response to your BS.

I've been reading through many articles today from yahoo, msnbc, time, etc. . There are many that have mentioned the origin of the Scalito nickname as being one given to Alito because of his similarity to Scalia in his judging and conservative stance by fellow attorneys. I've also seen the Alliance for Justice PAC refer to him by this nickname but no prominent (or otherwise) Democrats refer to him in this way. I'd say somebody jumped the gun in blaming Democrats or 'liberal press' for this little bit, not that it really matters, as this nominee has got the goods, and this time, the support to pull through.
