Like most people I receive a lot of spam in my inbox. I use my e-mail for pretty much everything including business so finding a way to filter the spam while minimzing the chances of good mail getting tagged as spam is important. I recently purchased Outlook 2003 after trying out Thunderbird and decided Outlook is better for my needs. Outlook has a built-in junk mail filter that does a prett good job at filtering the mail, but it seems lately more and more spam is getting through. So now I decided to look for a piece of software that will help it along.

One of my favorite sites to find software is Snapfiles. They have a great selection of shareware and freeware with reviews from people who have tried the software. I tried a few trials of software such as Norton Anti-spam, but they just seemed too intrusive. I wanted a piece of software that seemed to work seamlessly with Outlook. As always, why pay for software when you get just as good, or better, for free. I went over to the freeware section and started looking at the most popular freeware spam filters they have.

After trying a couple out I finally settled with Spambayes. It uses bayesian filtering so it “learns” from the mail I receive. You can “train” the filter to help it know what is spam and what is good mail. Setup was simple and there is a wizard that helps you setup the configuration the first time you start it. You can configure Spambayes where and how to handle mail it thinks is junk mail. Spambayes place two buttons into Outlook that you can use to label mail as spam or good mail. This helps train the filter to know what is spam and what isn't.

I have been using it and it has so far only let one piece of spam into my inbox and hasn't put any good mail into the junk mail folder. One of the best things about this software is it's free. If you want to sort out the mail you get everyday, I recommend trying this software.

I also use Spambayes with Outlook 2003 (it doesn't work with OE) and have turned off the built in MS filter. Works great.
