v2.20 improves AI, Balance, and Gameplay
Published on December 17, 2015 By Island Dog In GalCiv II News

The crew here at Stardock cares a lot about our community and the games that we produce for you.

That's why we're pleased to announce that version 2.20 for Galactic Civilizations II
is available for you today!

Even when a title is "finished" and put out to market, there are always little things we find that could use a tweak or a change here and there. We also know what it's like to enjoy an old game so much that you keep going back to it, even when there are newer and "better" versions of it out there.

With help of some awesome community members, the Dev Team has taken all of the suggestions and implemented them into this update. You can find he entire change log (spoiler alert: it's long!) at the bottom of this post.

A few words from our CEO and President, Brad Wardell:

"It was awesome being able to work with the fans to integrate years of their own mods and tweaks into the base game. They also gave me a long list of areas where they thought I could improve the AI, which I used to dig into the now 10 year old AI source code base to implement."

We hope you enjoy the update. We have an awesome community here at Stardock and are so very happy that you're a part of it. Have a great holiday season!

Did you start up the right game? What you describe is Dread Lords.

on Dec 23, 2015

It sounds like you're somehow only running the original GalCiv2, and not the executable for Arnor. Find the GC2TwilightOfTheArnor.exe file (it's in the Galactic Civilizations II - Ultimate Edition\Twilight folder) and run that.

Support ticket written as I have the 3 original games.

Update:  Stardock immediately replaced my 3 separate old GalCiv2 games with the Ultimate Edition (digital download)  Very impressed.  It didn't generate a shortcut, so you have to go into the "Twilight" folder and make a shortcut from the executable.  This is the only file you need to run and it will be at v2.20 and can access the first two campaigns.

Interestingly GameStop now sees the Ultimate Edition base game and first expansion as requiring an update but I'm not sure I want to do that.  I decided to leave the original game where it is for now.

Thank you Stardock and I hope this may help someone else.

What in the world happened to this update ! .... there is NO ship design now on the main menu .. and it only shows Dread Lord only as a campaign .. what happened to Twilight and the other campaigns ! ... am I missing something or did this update actually remove thingys ! .. WTF ! ... please explain ...

Sounds like your installation is hosed. I just finished un-installing the original 3 games, and installing the Ultimate edition, and I definitely have all 3 campaigns and do have the ship editor on the main menu.

I have ultimate and everything seems to be working fine. My apologies if I jumped the gun last week.

One question: have any changes been made to the map editor? I'm just wondering because I'm still using a custom map that I made with 2.04

Happy Holidays everybody!

no, the only changes to hardcoded stuff is to GC2TwilightOfTheArnor.exe

Gerardo58 what version of windows are you using. You need to find the install file under your downloads. Once you install the game there may be two folders, but only one icon on the desktop which is the old version. The next method varies depending on which version of windows you have. Mine is windows 10. Under file explorer find you c drive click on it. Find the windows folder click on it. Find the programs 86 folder click on it. Find the stardock  folder click on it. There is probably 2. If there is then is the second under twilight find the twilight executable right click make shortcut icon on desktop.

White ships signify an error in shipstyles files.

Quoting jecy99,

a while back, i downloaded the official fan patch, that had a new .exe file.    I forget exactly the way ya installed it, but it needed that file to make it all work.  I'm pretty sure frogboy helped out with that.

Now with this new update, i am unsure if i need to use the old file?  Or should i just run the steam patcher to update to the new files on steam?    (the steam fix option to me, might work)

Basically i am just curious how i get it all working after using endless mods for years.  Do i need to disable the mods, and then just run the vanilla version, as it looks like it also was done with work from many of the mod makers.

I'm almost tempted to just do a fresh install.. but i don't wanna loose all my custom ships.  (i forget where they are stored)   at any rate, how do i get this running

thanks for the continued support

The "official fan patch" is the new update. The exe included was a test version. The new update encompasses all of that. Yes you should disable mods.

Thanks,  I disabled the Mod's, and then after the patcher ran, i did a file integrity check, and it replaced the .exe i'm guessing as that is the one i replaced to use that other mod.

I fired it up and got the correct version..  can't wait to start a new game! So nice to see a company, update a 5-10+ year old product. It really shows they care about the game, and not just moving on to something new.  I was actually kinda shocked to see another patch, especially with GC3 out..  But Major Kudos!

Hey if you want white ships check disable unused textures in options. Serves me right for trying to make a old as good as possible since my hardware can handle it.

on Dec 26, 2015

Why doesn't Chrome like the new file? When I download from Stardock My Downloads, Chrome is telling me "GalCiv2_UltimateEdition_2.20.exe may harm your browsing experience, so Chrome has blocked it."

on Dec 26, 2015

That's something we'll have to look into, but for now I'd just suggest using a different browser to download with.

Thanks for letting us know.

on Dec 30, 2015

I submitted a support ticket to get the Ultimate Upgrade but have not heard anything?
