I’ve been saying since Google bought Nest there would be a great opportunity for a company to create a good competitor to Nest, and Honeywell might just be on track to do that.  It announced Lyric today, which is a new smart thermostat which will work with an accompanying iOS or Android app to help you control and maintain efficiency of your cooling and heating systems.

Lyric will use geofencing to know if you’re home or not, and you can set distances so when you are getting close to home Lyric can change the temperature on the thermostat so your home is cooler (or warmer) when you arrive.  It will also notify you when your filter needs to be changed, and will also let you know of extreme temperature changes so you can adjust your system while you’re away.

The Lyric will be available for $279 and will be available in Lowe’s store in August, and are available now through select contractors.
