We talked about our favorite games of 2013 in another post, so lets go forward and talk about what we are looking forward to in 2014.

There seems to be lots of games coming in 2014, and these are just a few of that I can think of off the top of my head.

  • Tropico 5
  • Clockworks Empire
  • Watch Dogs
  • The Division
  • GTA V
  • Titanfall (maybe)
  • Assassin's Creed Unity
  • Far Cry 4

What are you looking forward to this year?

I certainly look forward toward Homeworld remastered, but you know, its gonna be like buying Blu-ray disk of a movie, you have already seen before as DivX. The quality is gonna be way higher, but its still gonna be the same thing, i dont think there is going to be anything surprising. I wish it felt again like it did back in 2000...but its just not going to happen. Its a nice memory from the past and its going to stay that way - and no remastered edition is going to change it.

Potential Homeworld 3 on other hand...

I am not sure about Planetary Annihilation either. I was excited at first, but as i seen the gameplay videos, its sort of gone away. I dunno, i like big scale games like Sins or SupCom, but i guess this one crossed some threshold in this regard and its bit over the top. The planets seem to be too small, the bases way too big almost touching themselves, the armies of units way too expendable...we shall see.

And i certainly dont like its cartoony graphics - SupCom looked sooo much better. It was supposed to be the next-gen game, but visually, sure as hell it is not.

I guess I can understand that sentiment about Homeworld, though for me, I haven't played the first one in so long, that it will be almost like the first time.  Supposedly they'll be using revamped models as well, and refining the game's balance and functions, along with all the bug fixes and optimizations that just never happened.

I too would be eager for a Homeworld 3...but I'm not sure what form it would take at this point.  I'm unwilling to accept a genre change unless it's a spinoff rather than serial.  And it had certainly better not have anything to do with the atrocity of gaming that was Homeworld: Cataclysm.

-

As for cartoony graphics...the vast majority of games are like that now...including (perhaps especially) GalCiv III.  Frankly, I don't really care much at all about graphics.  I care about gameplay, and these days, almost all gameplay has become "idiot-friendly".  I want to say it's only the mainstream games appealing to the hopelessly moronic majority, but the reality is that a large number of indie games are just as bad.  A large part of it stems from this notion that everything must always be a quantum leap improvement on something else, or must be completely original.  Like I always say, there are infinite ways to make a light bulb, but only an incalculably small fraction actually work.  Well, congrats...we're hitting the wall now, technologically speaking.  Ah, the wonders of exponential development.  "Next-gen" is perhaps the most damaging term in video games.  It expresses everything that is wrong with game development.

-

It also occurs to me that I'm eager to see how Elite: Dangerous turns out.  Unfortunately, EVE: Valkyrie is going to be heavy competition since EVE itself is already the truest possible spiritual successor to Elite in every way but flight control.  But, I'm optimistic.

...
I'm not even sure Relic or Creative Assembly, if that's matter, could give us something worthy now.

I'm not sure if we'll ever see Dawn of War 3. But if we do will it potentially live up to the glory of Dawn of War? Took a glimpse at Slitherines' Armageddon. It's all to closely tied to the Armageddon campaign. Not much variety in chapters and so forth...

but - back on topic

I am very much looking forward to these games...

Elite Dangerous

D3 - Reaper of Souls

GalCiv III

Grim Dawn

Warlock 2 - The exiled

and ... yes, hopefully another good W40k game

on Jan 17, 2014

Gal Civ 3

Distant Worlds Universe (I've just doubled their marketing effort with this one post)

Starcraft 2: Legacy of the Void

Star Citizen

Elite Dangerous

Probably not 2014 but Mass Effect 4

on Jan 17, 2014

Not sure if all of these will be out this year, but these are the games I'm most looking forward to, in no particular order:

GalCiv 3
Tropico 5
Divinity: Original Sin

Tex Murphy: Tesla Effect
Wasteland 2
Age of Wonders 3
Pillars of Eternity
Carmageddon Reincarnation
Hero U: Rogue to Redemption
Dreamfall Chapters
Torment: Tides of Numenera
Armikrog
Massive Chalice
Endless Legend
Warlock 2 (Hoping they add click+drag and hotkeys)
Banished (next month woo!)
South Park: The Stick of Truth
Broken Age
Witcher 3

You think they'll stop milking the franchise?

Hm, judging by Company of Heroes 2, this thought is only logical. Should we see DoW3 in foreseeable future, it will probably have cracking ice and slightly more sophisticated line of sight system. And a lot of enduring.

Slitherine is, a, well, "Slitherine". Not that I don't like their games, but I rather grab my minis instead. At least for now.

We're talking about Games Workshop. So milking the franchise for like ages is set in stone. But there's nothing wrong about that.

I don't know what to make of the secrecy about Dawn of War 3. If a developer is working on a good product and feeling confident about it why no talk about it. So much time has past and no news about it one can only assume it will be delayed even further. But I think we will see Dawn of War 3.

I meant Relic - GW obviously decided to throw away licenses to everyone.

I'm not sure what Relic could add to DoW3, I mean if DoW2 took something from Company of Heroes, what DoW3 should take from Company of Heroes2? "Enduring"?

It would be quite a stagnation. IMHO.

Could be wrong, but maybe it's not a good time to announce DoW3, it may be too early in development, or they analyze data they gather from CoH2, to implement them in DoW3. No idea. But indeed, I doubt they'll stop milkin that cow, bringing them golden eggs.

JUST RELEASED:

Heroes of a Broken Land, an old-school indie dungeon crawler with some nifty additions such as multiple party dungeons, random events and multiple difficulty sliders to tailor the experience.

It may on the surface seem to be a grind, but the wealth of tactics (both in dungeon and out) and ways of developing your characters make it a great little indie title.

Doing my best, sir!

There are several games that sound very interesting.  Some on the PC and some on the IPAD.

Shroud of the Avatar(Looking pretty good. Looks and feels like an Ultima)

Wasteland 2(seems like everyone agrees on this. I am debating whether to join the beta on this)

Exiles (IOS)(I loved Ravensword)

Galactic Civlizations 3(of course)

I am hoping that Disney will allow 1313 to go through. This sounded like this game had serious potential.

I am sure there are other games that I am not listing, but these are the ones that come to my mind.

No particular order:

Transistor

Wasteland 2

Dungeon of the Endless

Sins of a Dark Age

The Witcher 3

Age of Wonders 3

Dragon Age: Inquisition

Invisible, Inc.

Homeworld: Shipbreakers (not sure if this will come out in 2014 or not)
