Paul Thurrott takes a look at Windows 8.1 and Stardock's ModernMix!

"ModernMix provides what I think is a better “mix” (hence the name, presumably) of mobile apps and desktop. It lets you run Windows mobile apps (Mail, Calendar, Xbox Music, etc.) in windows on the Windows desktop, just like real desktop applications. This means they can float, be resized, be pinned to the taskbar, and so on."

Indeed!

Modern Mix makes "Modern Apps" usable for the desktop.

"For me, Start8 and ModernMix change Windows 8 from an annoying waste of time to a competent, up-to-date desktop/laptop operating system. The effect is remarkable. Suddenly there is no more frustration, no more angry blog posts. I'm back to enjoying my computer. Windows 8 is Windows 7, only better.

Ever since XP I've turned off most of Windows' visual effects, so turning off the Start Screen is perfectly natural to me. Microsoft is free to introduce all the crazy, half-baked ideas they want. As long as I have the ability to avoid them, I'll continue to use Windows."
