Today we have released a new build of the popular Start8 application for Windows 8!

We added a new feature that we think you'll love:

  • Automatically load your Windows desktop on login (vs the start screen)

Just a reminder of the other features Start8 includes:

  • Adds a start button back to your taskbar
  • Adds control over the "Start" menu size on the Explorer desktop
  • Adds option for the "WinKey" to show fullscreen "Metro" desktop - Adds Run... option via right-click menu
  • Adds Shutdown... option via right-click menu
  • Choose a custom Start button image

Start8 requires Windows 8 Consumer or Release Preview.

Now cut this out!  I have all ready made up my mind about Windows 8.  If you folks keep providing ways and the means to improve on it's user interface I will have no other choice but to look at changing that decision.

I'm not going to lie, it's really nice being greeted with my desktop on first boot.

Okay, forgot to ask this question......when Microsoft does release Windows 8 to the public is there any chance that Start8 won't work because of some 'code change'?

I don't care if they ever do.  I'll just use Start8.

There's always a chance, but most of the talk about code changes around the start menu involve removing legacy code for the old start menu.  Since Start8 doesn't rely on that code, it's not likely that it will be affected.  (As always, no guarantees, blah blah, you know the drill.)

Now simply put. I don't like anytype of touchscreen which seems MS is trying to push on us.

I've got an Android Tablet using a mouse on it while it can be done is next to impossible to "CLICK" want you want without actually Clicking on something else close by or even half way up the screen.

And to use a stylus or your finger it's once again awful hard to use to scroll even with adjusting the settings without going somewhere you never intended to go.

That being said like a lot of others I don't understand why MS doesn't allow us to choose the StartUp interface we want upon install or startup of a new machine that's pre-installed with 8.

But once again Stardock gives us a "FANTASTIC" way customizing our desktop the way we want it and not MS telling us we just have to put up with it.

My question is this Is Start8 going to remain free or will it become pay for after Win 8 is finally released?

And my other question is this I own ObjectDock Plus V.2 already will it also work on Win 8 after it's released or will I have to buy an upgrade?

Just wonder what's the utility of an application like Start8 as Micro$oft will only release edition of 8 which will not allow any other app to bring a possibility to have something like a "start panel"

According to reports, Start8 works just fine on the RTM version.  LINK
