Stardock announced today that its PC strategy titles are hitting Steam starting with the real-time strategy hit Sins of a Solar Empire: Trinity ($19.95, http://store.steampowered.com/app/201290) The Sins of a Solar Empire series has sold more than 2 million copies worldwide and swept many of the top gaming media awards, including IGN’s overall PC Game of the Year award. Steam and Gamestop PC Downloads are featuring Sins of a Solar Empire: Trinity at a 25 percent off discount this week.

“With the sale of our former PC digital download technology to GameStop earlier this year, we no longer have any conflicts of interest in offering our titles to other digital distribution channels,” said Brad Wardell, CEO of Stardock. “We are starting with Sins of a Solar Empire: Trinity with other titles being made available over the coming weeks.”

More distribution platform announcements are planned for Stardock titles in the coming weeks in order to give fans the opportunity to play on the platform of their choice.

Quoting alce11, reply 40Alienating existing customers is never a good strategy.Existing customers still have their product . . how is this alienating?

What I meant is that with Steam, people buying the game now have an overall better package compared to people who already have it on Impulse. The customers who bought and supported the game in the past might feel left out -alienated- of an important improvement. I know I do and I bet I'm not alone.

How do people who buy game on steam have better package

Instead of re-purchasing, would it make sense just to wait and get Rebellion on Steam, which will have everything (it will right), if one were so inclined?   (Just a general question, I'm comfortable with my previous pre-order decisions.)

on Nov 16, 2011

For instance I only purchased Stardock products over Impulse to support Stardock. I would prefer all my content be with one provider and Steam has won that position due to the broad product offering, quality of the platform, and market timing.

Anyways, I do have a question though. Having purchased War of Magic on release through impulse, how will the free expansions be handled? My obvious preference is that if they are available via Steam I be provided a copy through Steam rather than Impulse. I do not like the idea of having multiple gaming libraries through different providers. EA is annoying enough right now with Origin.

Lets remember the Stardock store is the preferred place to buy our games, obviously.  Steam is just another outlet we are making our games available on.  This does not affect your current game, and we aren't giving away keys just so they can be applied to another platform.

Sins: Rebellion pre-orders right now are Stardock store only, and will likely remain that way for some time.

This might be the first review on steam at least according to the Sins Steam page.

As long as Steam is not required to install, and is not required to play (only to update, especially for physical disc copies) then I think this is a most excellent way of getting extra revenue as well as maintaining IC/SD DRM policy. Excellent!

Hey Island Dog -

Can you give us an ETA for the release of other Stardock games onto steam?

and will the release of rebellion on to steam be simultaneous with the " Impulse " Release ?

or will us steam users have to wait?

Well, neither of those things would be true if you buy the Steam version. But it's not a Steamworks game, so it's not going to require Steam in any form if you buy it elsewhere.

That is a good point *amends his comment*. I was primarily thinking from the perspective of purchasing from a brick and mortar store.

Well, If MinMax Games (makers of SPaZ) transferred (or technically "generated") new keys for Impulse owners of their game for Steam, why can't this be done for this situation? I agree with others here. Ever since Stardock ditched Impulse by selling out to GameStop, I've been purchasing more games on Steam. I really wish the Devs would reconsider.

on Nov 16, 2011

I imagine the GameStop guys would have quite a bit of reason to prevent that kind of thing from happening. That maybe the very problem they were talking about.

Frankly I'm surprised Gamestop didn't pull some strings to keep Sins as an exclusive.  Now that Stardock isn't competing with other digital distributors it's a no-brainer for them to be available through all channels.  The only real loser here is Gamestop, which just lost their only significant exclusive title.

on Nov 16, 2011

There's also something with Humble Bundle...you're buying games outside of Steam, but you can also get redeem code to register with Steam too...all things considered, I don't think that it's impossible (though might be hard) for Ironclad/Stardock to have customers to get their old serial, and generate new one for registering with Steam...

And the question is: if there's new updates, will it apply to all outlets or not?

I am not quite certain my complaint (and that of several others, apparently) is being fully understood, so I want to try to explain it a little more clearly. To the end user, for various reasons, content provider *matters*. The choice of Steam vs Impulse vs what have you isn't "just another outlet", many people have strong preferences and frequently people prefer to consolidate around a single platform as it is much more convenient to do so. Stardock opted not to provide us a choice when they went Impulse-exclusive, and while we were obviously willing to tolerate that (you guys make good games!) it is undesirable, and I was not happy being forced to use a program I otherwise would not.

Now that SINS is available on Steam, suddenly newcomers are given the choice of which provider they use, but I have to pay twice to get the same discretion! The desire isn't for "something extra", or "free copies", I want my ONE copy to have the same amount of choice in provider that a newcomer would have, because that wasn't given to me when I bought it. If you truly can't do this, I can accept that, but I think it is important to understand why this might upset some people. Sure, we still have the game on Impulse, but to some the choice of provider is significant.

That said: Please don't get me wrong. I'm a fan of Stardock and I continue to be, and I applaud the option to open up to Steam. I hope to get many future title through it in the future, most importantly Rebellion.
