This is a really good article with a casual tone explaining more of the Impulse sale among other things.  Yes, bee’s are also discussed.

"GameStop basically built a new company, owned by GameStop, but independent, and that answers directly to the president of GameStop," says Wardell. "They've also gone out and attracted all these incredibly talented people to run it. Digital people, not retailers."

Excellent interview ... should answer some questions for folks.

I like the article.  One thing I want to emphasize was that we talked about the Gamers Bill of Rights for quite a bit and so the discussion there is condensed.

The basic premise of the GBOR is that it attempts to set an understood relationship between the game PUBLISHER and the game PLAYER.  That is, people should be able to return their game to the publisher IF reasons X, Y, and Z (game is buggy, has DRM that is unacceptable, or just performs poorly).  It doesn't apply to a retailer because the retailer is not the one who makes the game and I would never try to push our beliefs onto others. It needs to be voluntary.

Good stuff, thanks.

Fantastic!!

This interview sheds a light on the issues that we hadn't seen yet.    Gives me a bit of optimism.

Nice interview.

I don't have complete faith in Gamestop, but if Brad's got faith in them, then that does mean something to me.

Good article.  Glad you are getting out there and offering up more interviews on the topic.  I know this has been stated in other places many times, but I'll bring it up again.

Wardell's talking about Fallen Enchantress, his upcoming turn-based strategy War of Magic "do over." Stardock's giving it away free to War of Magic owners. And the company's still hammering War of Magic into shape, patch by patch.

This.

There's no real need to retread the launch of elemental, etc.  But this... this is the reason why I'll continue to do business with SD and purchase games developed/published by your company.  Giving away fallen enchantress (to owners that bought before x date, etc) is a really savvy move.  Obviously, a costly move one at that, but its quiet clear that you want to support your fans.  Things would have gone down VERY differently with any other company.  Thanks!

" Steam Rivalry  "

That made me laugh .

I turn off the recorder and finish my burger. We talk some more about general geek stuff, like what we're watching or reading and why, then go. Before the visit's over, Brad will take me back and show me several white, boxlike beehives he keeps in a meadow behind Stardock's HQ building.

My younger brother's allergic to bee stings. I'm wondering for the umpteenth time if I am, too. I ask if we ought to suit up first. He tells me I have nothing to worry about.

I really liked the style in which the interview/article was written.  Thanks for giving such a great interview Brad, and props to the writer for turning into such a fantastic article.  The above quoted seems to make you out in the "Evil Genius" mold

I gotta say that I agree with Brad's analysis, but it's dependent on Gamestop doing the right things businesswise.  I don't think that's a slam-dunk sure thing, though I think the odds are pretty good.

I'll say this, if Impulse purchases give discounts at Gamestop, I'd be more likely to shop at Gamestop (though I expect my days of console purchasing end with the PS3, it's getting too evil)

I just wish the Impulse purchase money could be used to fund another game, but it Stardock even going to look for relationships like what it has with Ironclad in the future?  (I know the project I'd want to see funded, but it won't happen)

This is where the fun begins.

How come Impulse was sold to gamestop? Was it not profitable or something? You guys were second behind Steam I believe.

on Apr 07, 2011

I think the money from the sale should go towards buying the Ironclad team many pizzas.

Stardock doesn't want to become a retailer, that is why the sold Impulse.
