I have used this service for quite a while, so I’m pretty disappointed that it is being discontinued.  Formally called Foxmarks, Xmarks was a free browser sync service that allowed you to sync bookmarks and passwords across browsers even on different platforms.

Xmarks will discontinue the service in January, and they are giving the option to delete all your data now if you wish.  I have removed all my data and uninstalled the browser extensions.  Now I will just rely on Firefox sync and MobileMe.

What a shame. I have used Xmarks for years.

Thanks for the heads up ID.

Disappointed indeed. I have used this service for years as well.

At least, from what I hear, FF4's sync will work well.

Never heard of it...

Wow, what a shame. I too have been using this add-on for a long time. Heck I even created a plug-in for my blog for all my blog bookmarks.

How does Firefox sync work? I checked out the add-on on the site and it only has a 3 out of 5 star. gonna try it out to see.

What about Delicious?  I've been using it for over 4 years now and love it.  I'd be lost without it.

Aside from having my bookmarks accessible from any browser, any computer I use, I'm in love with the Delicious Bookmarks Toolbar.  I use different tags to organize what I want on the toolbar.  For example, I have "toolbar:support" (links to our 3rd party support services), "toolbar:company" (our company links), "toolbar:companyit" (links to our IT pages), "favorites" ("company" is replaced by our company name, but anyways...).  I chose those tags to be listed on the toolbar.  Then I click on the tag drop down and it will show all of the links tagged with that tag.  I have different tags that I have displayed on the toolbar at home vs. my work laptop.

I had looked at Xmarks when it came out but I was skeptical of how they could provide a service like this for nothing.  I honestly wasn't aware they were still around.  I was hopeful for Google Bookmarks but it never turned into something useful like Xmark or Delicious.  I feel much more comfortable using Delicious since they're owned by Yahoo.  Granted, Yahoo could pull the plug, but I don't see that happening.

Xmarks is looking into the possibility of a paid service.  They are looking for people to pledge to the service to see if it is viable.

The plege is $10/year.  Nothing is donated at this time, they are just performing research to see if it is a viable option.
