Google Voice has been invite-only for quite a while now, and today Google announced that it is now open to everyone.  Google Voice is one of their best services offered, and in case you aren’t familiar with what Google Voice does, check this video out.

Sweet, Google Voice is the service I've always wanted a use for but never had one.  Seems pretty awesome for sales people though.

Not available in Canada... Pity..

Thank you, Island Dog.  I just signed up.  This is a wonderful find!  I would be SOO in the dark ages without WinCustomize to keep me tech savvy!

This one looks like a home run, so I signed up. It should help out with the poor cellular signal we get at home. Now I can block all those relatives that keep calling.....

Pity it only works for certain carriers.

I've been using Google Voice for quite a few months now and it is awesome.

Given the latest revelations of Google, I think I will pass.  My voice mail is for my ears only, not the worlds.

Dr Guy

I think you're putting malicious intent where there is none.  Despite their offerings, Google is really a technology think-tank.  A bunch of really smart people making things they think are cool.  Unfortunately really smart people don't always think through the ramifications of their actions.  Now if you want a company that's willfully malicious look at AT&T or Verizon or Comcast.  Someone you're entirely likely to already have your voice mail with.

No, I do not think Google has a malicious intent.  They just do not care, so they are not safeguarding what is not valuable to them.

Having worked both sides of the aisle, my favorite saying is that network guys make things available.  Security guys make them not available.  At google, you have a bunch of "make things available" guys and very few "make them not available".  That is what I do not trust.

Google voice is a great forwarding answering machine and a great number when using sites like Craigslist.com. No need to give out your personal number when selling stuff online, just give the google voice # and avoid call them back.

Wow, I'm glad I saw this in the forums.......I didn't even know about this. Pretty cool, and very useful.

I use this as my business number which I put on business cards and give to people who I meet.  I have it set for voicemail and it e-mails/texts me with transcribed text that I can review at my convenience.
