BigDownload got some time with Stardock’s Brad Wardell about the ongoing status of Elemental: War of Magic, and have published their interview this week.

You have said you are taking some time off after Elemental is completed to do some mod making. Why did you make this decision?

I really wanted to get back into what I enjoy the most which is pure game programming. I started the company back in college 15+ years ago because of my love of coding computer AI and modding. When you're making a full blown game, you spend most of your time managing the creation of assets and engine work and that. I'd really like to spend some time remaking some of the games I loved back in the 90s that are "too simple" to make into commercial games but would make sense as a free mod using the Elemental engine.”

I like the APB screenshot in their Elemental gallery.

That's actually an example of what you can do with the modding tools.

Obviously that's one of the mods brad is working on.

32-bit memory restraints has been our biggest challenge so far. One of our big goals for the game has been to really personalize the experience where each unit looks different. Right down to their hair, clothes, face, etc.

ACK!  Does this mean the plans for a 64-bit executable have been scrapped?

@ Rosco_P: Haha, good one!

@goodgimp: No, but it wont be ready for retail. There is a post on the board somewhere.

It hasn't been scrapped, but the 64-big version won't be available until after release. https://forums.elementalgame.com/384341

EDIT: Ninja'd. But there's the link to the thread mentioned.

Cool, thanks guys.

The more I see consoles and even most PC games going towards very shallow game play (FPS games, the shallowest genre I know of, seems all the rage) the more I agree that there is a growing market for complex strategy games, including turn based games.

I've always loved these kind of games, but in the rush to appeal to the masses, I've noticed them declining a bit over the past several years. At the same time, newer gamers are riding up the ladder towards wanting more sophisticated products.

I envy Stardock, and any company that is poised to take advantage of, and profit from, the expanding vacuum here!

I would like to nkow whicjh a re those games from the 90's that Brad finds too simple to make commercial games for, but good as free mods.  And I can't wait to play Elemental, Im going to mod for it too myself.

I'm wondering if we're going to be able to push forward walls in the final version like in this screenshot here:
