The previews for Elemental: War of Magic are rolling in this week, and the latest to hit my inbox is from the fine folks over at GameSpot.

“Our brief tour with the game covered several other additions to the game, such as combat balancing, which is currently intended to fairly let players who focus on combat develop a small army of highly trained warriors equipped with pricey weapons, but to put them on even ground with players who pursued a different research path, such as civics or questing. All the loyal subjects that populate your kingdom and diligently toil away on your farms providing you with your economy can be converted into a cheap standing army in a pinch, and even a small, highly advanced army equipped with the most expensive weapons and armor around may have trouble defeating a sufficiently large number of peasants with middling armor and weapons.”

Nice to get some coverage, but i found the preview a bit lacking (on all fronts). It somehow read as if the reviewer wasn't very interested in the game at all.

*shrug* But maybe i got it all wrong   .

Perhaps he was hoping for flying dragons -  - and was dismayed they would not be swooping down in tactical glory to rain destruction on one's armies... (at least at product release)

I'm gonna have to agree with you OsirisDawn. That was an incredibly anemic review. It lacked any passion, and interest. It was like reading something by someone who's forced to fill a quota. Meeting the bare bones essentials, but doing it with a complete lack of flair or style.

I came away with the impression he was forced to review something he couldn't care about. Which coming from Gamespot, is a bit odd. It's their choice, but the one preview over on the 1UP is a great review. Though that one felt like it was written by a person lacking any depth on the thesaurus front. But for lack of sufficient prose, they certainly made the selling point on the feel of D&D. Which as one of the 24 million who've played that game during its life time (I've been gaming D&D for 28 years.) I found that selling point about adventurers stirring up messes that others would have to clean up.. being a great connective piece.

Its not a smoking gun, but if you click on the person's name and look at his blog, it's almost all fighting games.
