Unless you have been living under a rock, you probably know that Apple has a big event planned that is supposedly going to be the unveiling of the much speculated Apple "tablet". I myself, while being completely addicted and obsessed with new technology, am excited to see what is delivered, but I'm pretty confident I won't be getting one at launch this time around.

In talking with others around the office, the guesses for price are around $800-$1000 with me taking the $800 bet. Of course we know absolutely nothing about it, but that doesn't stop it from being fun to guess. We have had some interesting discussions about what this tablet, and any other tablet-like computer should be.

I envision the Apple tablet to be like a big iPhone. It's going to have games, not hardcore ones, but fun, casual games like Peggle for instance. It will have the typical "widgets", web browsing capability, e-mail, and basically everything else that is on the iPhone. My best way to describe it would be an enhanced media device.

This render from an artist on Flickr is exactly what I think it will look like.

For now, all we can do is wait until January 27th and seen what the hype is all about, and if it lives up to it.

I'm guessing the battery life is going to be the fly in the ointment on this one (as it is with all Apple products).

Another persons view on the matter.

Apple and hype .... no never!!!!

It's going to be locked down like the iPhone, no thanks I'm wait for the Google tablet that's coming out.

They do have the ability to build up expectation and a huge following...hope it doesn't disappoint, I.D.

Cheap it won't be, and probably won't really be pocket sized. If it's just a bigger iPhone it'll be a 'big' disappointment...

and yes, Karen...the battery life will really be a big factor in success/failure (although it's hard to imagine a failure with their adherents).

I.D.....we might be surprised at it's gaming capabilities: LINK

I imagine that given the size, and how pricing scales with viewable area and how thin an object is, it will start at 1350.

Well, it's here now. It really does look like a big iPhone with the button and everything. I do find you price guess to be very low. I have yet to see a cheap Apple PC for those prices, I can't possible imagine why they would sell such a PC like this table PC for that low. I would go more towards $1500.00 but not $800.00. I don't know much about Apple PCs since I'm a Windows kinda guy but as I said before, I have never seen a cheap Apple PC.

One thing has not changed - too expensive (given the market).

This is a really compelling device once you stop trying to compare it to a notebook- that's not what it's supposed to be.

$499 for the starter version.

That's going to instantly kill the Kindle and all other ebook readers.

This will give you the prices and information

Yeah, but then you compare it to the iPod Touch and iPhone and realize... it's exactly the same thing, but with a bigger screen!

So who wants to place bets on how long it will take Google to make a competing tablet?
