SkinStudio 7 has been released today.  SkinStudio is an application that allows users to create and modify visual styles, also known as skins, for Windows 7, Vista, and  XP.  These skins can then be applied using WindowBlinds.  WindowBlinds 7 was also recently released, and SkinStudio 7 now supports the new features that were included in WB7.

Some of these include:

  • Support for new WindowBlinds 7 features
  • Overhaul of the user interface
  • Easier access to layers, improved code editor in Pro version
  • Ability to create UIS0 skins
  • Various fixes and updates

SkinStudio is a free download which can be found here.  The Pro version has several advanced features and is part of the Object Desktop suite, or available for $19.95.

More info can be found at www.skinstudio.net.

so I was wondering if I was entitled to a free upgrade (purchased about 9 months ago?). went to Impulse and saw it listed until after I was notified that there was an impulse upgrade (which I declined to update) and then with the refresh, the program was gone from the listing. so, please a little more info on upgrading and whom is elegible.

gmc2 .... why did you decline the Impulse update?

Can I upgrade  from sks6 for less than $19.95?

Indeed.  In fact the upgrade from SKS 6 Professional is a mere $0.00

If SkinStudio 7 Professional is not showing up in Impulse you may need to add a registration for it and use your SKS6 serial.

Thanks for your suggestion - I'm having the same problem of SKS7 Pro not showing up as an upgrade from SKS 6 (purchased a month ago because I wanted SKS 7 beta, which I didn't get). Along with your suggestion, nothing I do will make SKS 7 Pro appear.

Perhaps I should write the 19.95 off as a loss and use the free version, as all I want to do is fix the taskbar bits in old skins for Win7.

my thought, right or wrong, is that every time I open impulse there is an update and so, I figure the update is probably more for content than anything else.

since I don't give access to my computer without proper reason and usually unless there is information as to why the update is required, I generally shy away from automatic updates.

Here is the reply I got from customer support on the issue:
I am afraid that we are not offering an upgrade path from SkinStudio 6 to SkinStudio 7.

guess that means we have to purchase regardless of time since 6 was purchased. feel sorry for anyone that purchased recently. thanks for looking into it.

Customer support are clearly confused.

They cannot offer an upgrade path because there is no paid upgrade as it is a free update.

I will find out what is going on as it should be showing up in Impulse for SKS6 Pro owners as far as I know.

Impulse wouldn't let me add a registration

Thanks for your help though

SkinStudio 6 -> SkinStudio 7 upgrades will be free. Slipped through the cracks at the end of the year, hopefully we can get that sorted next week. Though we're on holiday. If you have a registration for 6, email kwilas at stardock dot com and I'll sort it in the meantime.

Sounds great but i just reinstalled Impluse and all my stuff (ObjectDesktop) and well SkinStudio has a ( ! ) icon on it and i cant get it to go away, no update showing or anything. What's the issue and how can i fix this ??? As i tried to click re-activate also and it tells me it can not and i have to remove a file then try again. i dont want to do that yet if not needed but.. Think it was a file named extension of .bin
