We have been hearing rumors and speculation for months about when the release of Windows 7 will be, and today we finally have confirmation! Windows 7 will officially launch on October 22nd. The pricing of Windows 7 is still something that hasn't been revealed, but an interesting tidbit from CNET is:

"The tech guarantee program is not beginning immediately, but Microsoft did raise the possibility it will offer some sort of lower-cost upgrade to those who are already using Windows Vista."

That is certainly interesting that they would consider a lower price upgrade from Vista, but I personally would rather see Windows 7 priced competitively, and feature family pack pricing as I have mentioned before.

Given the popularity and positive response to win 7, I don't see MS giving any kind of cost savings at all.

They OWE people who bought Vista Ultimate a free upgrade to 7, since they've orphaned the Ultimate Extras (like DreamScene) and never supported those extras in the first place.

I think it would be worth MS's time to do this, as class action suits are looming on the Ultimate Extras debacle.

I'll believe it when I see it

as for those who feel you 'deserve' a free upgrade....Vista has been out long enough for you to have made an educated decision as to weather or not you wanted to deal with any bugs etc... if you ran out and bought it before investigating that is your own fault. and you will probably make the same mistake with 7 believing it will answer all your vista complaints, some it may, some it may not.

It is COMMON knowledge that EVERY OS release has bugs and problems, 7 will be NO different.

couldnt have said it better myself. besides if you look hard enough you could find faults in something that is perfect, and unless they give massive discounts to ppl who already have vista i wont be upgrading anytime soon.
