The latest Demigod Developer Diary is up at the RPG Vault on IGN.  The #3 edition covers how GPG wants to "evolve" the mechanics of the real-time strategy game.  It's another fantastic read!

"In most real-time strategy games, players have some mechanic that lets them acquire resources, which are then used to construct buildings, which are then used to produce units. When designing Demigod, our goal was to create a play style that had a lot of role-playing game elements to it, one that players could sit down and play in a short amount of time. Let's consider the challenge there. How do you create a strategy game that has short gameplay time, but doesn't feel like a click-fest? You don't want users to spend their time building gold mines or barracks, but you also want to incorporate enough strategy to let them showcase significant differences in their skill levels. "

I think trinkets are the items that you have to use, or maybe the ones with the special effects.  They are one of the groups of items other than the specific clothing types.

Trinckets are the items on the last page if you are an assassin.  They include the wand of speed.  As gnats mentions, they are items with added use special effect that are not consumables.
