Well I finally got Windows 7 installed on my laptop.  The only issue I had was getting the partitioning right, but that was my problem.

Installation took about 10 minutes, and in about 20 minutes overall I was on the desktop ready to work.  Very impressive!

So far, Windows 7 seems very fast and haven’t run into any problems as of yet.  No problems with application compatibility yet, and I’m really liking some of the design changes.

Still have a lot to go through, but my initial quick impression is great!

By "Stardock," do you mean Stardock Central?

Stardock Central isn't supported in Windows 7, and it's very unlikely that they will add support for Windows 7, as they are replacing SDC with Impulse.

Try Impulse instead.

Doh, dangit, I meant Impulse.

Also, some more information: I've tried both the 6-meg installer and the full installer.

i cant wait for microsoft to release windows 3.11 version SE since all versions after that have violated the EU bundling laws. I think 3.11 was the pinacle of windows and is only going down hill after that. Imagine a cool new version of 3.11 and WFW 3.11

That won't happen anytime soon... and the EU has rocks in its head, coming up with archaic laws that disadvantage European MS customers who want an OS with media player and the like straight out of the box.

Furthermore, MS' bundling of additional apps does not disadvantage third-party developers as no version of Windows has barred the installation of third-party apps... should a user opt for a third-party media player they can freely do so.  The EU can not prove disadvantage to third party devs, so in effect, the EU anti-bundling laws are a restriction of trade to Microsoft marketing a 'complete' product that's sold elsewhere in the World with little or no fuss.

Glad I don't live under the EU's umbrella... as a customer I'd hate having some fat arsed bureaucrat with half a brain telling me what I can and can not have included in an OS.

That's odd. I installed it in Windows 7 myself, no problems.

What other programs do you have installed in Windows 7? A clean install seems to work.

Also, it this the most recent Beta of Windows 7, with all of the latest updates?

Well it's the public beta - build 7000 - and I updated everything I could. I have Steam and Firefox and a few other things installed, but that's about it. Mostly games thus far, not many applications.

The installer just hangs. Bah.

on Jan 21, 2009

Games are not applications?

What's the difference?

Impulse installed fine for me on x64 W7.

Maybe you should try a fresh install of W7, then install only the Windows Update files, then Impulse before anything else.

I rather like the windows 7 approach. Nice and clean, with *optional* bloatware. If it wasn't for fat arsed bureaucrats with half brains, Microsoft would likely not have made it happen.

I'd hardly call Windows Media Player 'bloatware'... to me it's an integrated and essential part of Windows, Particularly so now that MS has improved it in Win 7.... and there's no additional downloading of a media player (which similarly becomes resource hogging bloat anyhow) to hear/see what I want.

No, the greatest purveyors of bloat are the RTM manufacturers, like HP for example, who load so much crapware that I would never buy a proprietary brand PC, ever.  If the EU needs to be coming down on anybody, it's them.

This is good advice. We have no clue what's causing it, but we do know that Impulse seems to install fine on our systems with a clean setup.

Have you installed any security applications, such as antivirus or firewall?

My suggestion, if all else fails: Download Process Explorer and Process Monitor from Sysinternals, take a look at Mark's blog to see how he uses his software to troubleshoot problems, and see if you can't zero in on a particular problem.

I guess it's time to renew my subscription and see if I can help you . . .

EDIT: Ok. Yeah, not all programs seem to work. The massive UI changes seem to affect WB to the point where it simply doesn't seem to work at all.
