Microsoft CEO, Steve Ballmer, kicked off CES 2009 last night with his keynote speech in which he announced the Windows 7 beta will be available for public download, this Friday. This will be a download-only version, and will expire in August. They haven't announced yet at what time it will be available, but it will only be for a limited time to the first 2.5 million downloaded.

You'll find Windows 7 is better/faster than Vista in every way and, yes, even faster than XP now.

Sounds like you are using it, how do we get keys?

From what I have read around the net there is absolutely nothing about Windows 7 that I would even care about, it is just another Windows Vista with a few minor modifications, and to spend hours downloading something I will never use would be a waste of time so I will pass on this one.

Personally I think Microsoft should have improved Windows XP and not even have bothered making a new OS, especially one (oops, now 2!) OS's that a pain in the rear to skin. I mean c'mon now, the only thing around to skin Vista for .msstyles format is AVE's Vista Style Builder, which is a super pain to use and would take a total genius to figure out. The only thing around to skin in Windowblinds format is SkinStudio 6, which is also very cumbersome to use and limited in its abilities. Why can't someone design a program that is so easy to use that a child could figure it out! Even SkinStudio 5 had its drawbacks. Now, if someone would have designed a program to skin Vista in either .msstyles or Windowblinds format that was like StyleBuilder from TGTSoft, I don't think anyone would have complained at all. It is sooooooooooo easy to use!

What in particular do you find limited in SKS6?

These seem to be Microsoft links.

Yeah, somebody over on the MS blog site posted those because the links on the Windows 7 page are down due to server issues... have been all day, so there's quite a few pissed off people over there at the moment.

I'm currently on 53% of the 64 bit ISO download and have the link to the 'key activation' page to download the key, however it is constantly busy and shows a page error, so I shall try again later.

According to someone over at the MS blog who rang MSDN support, the server issue should be resolved in time to reactivate the download links around noon tommorow US ESDT.  However, for those who can not wait that long, I believe Neowin.net may have information that may be useful in acquiring keys... if they can get beyond the page error.

Neil, it is basically the interface itself, it is very cumbersome when trying to design something to have to search a tree for the are you want rather than just clicking on the image itself like you can in StyleBuilder. Plus, there are some areas that do not skinned correctly that I pointed out to you several months ago, like the vertical quick launch area task bar chevron, and the fact that you cannot even make the chevron in the horizontal or vertical areas an image instead of just changing a text color like it is now. That plus the fact that you have to open a second window to edit an area is a pain when you should be able to do everything in a single window. It would also be nice if in the Theme Part Details area of SKS if the little icons showing if the area applied to XP or Vista were used like in other areas and if there were an icon toolbar instead of just drop down menus on the programs toolbar. I am also trying to figure out why some areas are duplicated in the tree of SKS 6, for instance the Please Wait Screen shows up under XP Specific, Shutdown & logoff screens and also at the bottom of the tree too. Plus when you click on help and it says to go to the WIKI on that area, there is nothing at the WIKI at all. Anyway, there are a lot of things that I personally do not like in SKS 6 that I feel could be improved is all.

Hi, I will help you.  Your download should be in the format of an ISO file so with Power ISo or whatever extract the file, then with Nero or Roxio burn it (make it to DVD). At this point you will have a working copy. My advice would be to partitiion your hard drive. Miniumm I would go is 25 GB as it 10GB installed.  Once that is done all you do is install it to your partition. If you have a CD key use it to install then after everyting is done you can check it by going to Control Panel and click on System. If it gives you a message 3 days left to activate, reenter your key and all will work fine. Hope it helps you...

Yeah, I was just about ready to give up and go to bed (was 12.40 am at the time here in Oz), but thought I'd give it one more go before shutting down the beast for the night.  I'm glad I did... after about half a dozen page refreshes I got the license key page up with all the relevant details.

Yup, I'm pretty pleased, but for now the rest can wait cos I've been up now for 23 1/2 hours and it's bedtime... got no blank DVD's 'til morning anyhow.

You would be better off to burn the ISO directly with Nero instead of extracting it first. That way the DVD will be bootable.

I used Roxio, but yes, I burned the ISO and made it a bootable DVD. Tried to dual boot with vista, but the installation would not see the drive I was trying to put it on, so I installed on my lappy.
