My wife got me an Acer Aspire One netbook this year for Christmas, and so far I’m loving it.  A Netbook is basically a mini-laptop that is meant for web use, messaging, and document tasks.  The one I got has a 8GB SSD drive and an 8GB SDHC card.  It’s running Windows XP, and has 1GB of RAM.  The biggest concern I had was the keyboard, which is roughly 90% of a normal sized keyboard, but the keyboard on the Acer is well designed, and is fine after a short adjustment period.

Now comes the task of getting it setup for my use, which means installing a bunch of software.

Some of the key applications I need:

  • Impulse:  Well it’s quite obvious I need Impulse, but one feature I use often is the integrated IRC client.
  • OpenOffice 3.0: I had a choice of either Office 2007, or OpenOffice 3.0, and I went with OpenOffice just because of the amount of installation space it saves.
  • FileZilla: Simply the best FTP client out there.
  • SnagIt 9: SnagIt is not only great for taking screenshots, it also has a very featured image editor that is perfect for basic image editing needs.
  • ObjectDock Plus:  I don’t want a bunch of icons on the desktop, and organizing them in tabs is the best.
  • Live Writer: If you blog, you should be using this.
  • TweetDeck:  If you are a Twitter user, TweetDeck is one of the best client applications out there.

No buddy, I haven't, I don't watch TV, and I don't look for stuff, plus I coudn't afford anything like that if anything, I'd upgrade this to a core, get rid of the p4

on Dec 31, 2008

You mean Core 2.

Core Duo sucked.  (Also, it was 32-bit only-and laptop only.)

(Though it is important to note that it didn't suck quite as badly as P4s.  )

on Dec 31, 2008

I don't even know what it means.. and it will be 10 years before I can do it

What's wrong with the p4? I only got it last year, why don't thing's stay current, we can't all be freakin' rich

on Dec 31, 2008

No need to bring income into this-I guarantee you I'm poorer than you are.  For the record, I've never actually owned a Core Duo (although I now own a Core 2 Quad).  But my system previous to this one was a 900MHZ AMD Athlon "Thunderbird", with a paltry 256MB (2x128MB) 133MHZ SDRAM and a 32MB TNT2 M64 video card.  For a while I was running only on 128MB-then I found the other stick.  But I basically put that thing together out of parts that no one wanted anymore-and for the longest time I ran a 4.76GB hard drive in it because that was all I had.

And in any case, I've done my research, and I've kept up.

The main thing wrong with the P4 is Intel should have stopped producing it when they hit 3GHZ.  (The Northwood was actually fairly good.)  Instead they tried to hit 4.0GHZ+ and in the process managed to make it consume far more power than should be necessary.  Then they stuck with that design and tried to fix it when it wasn't fixable.  For the record, their initial design plans for the P4 had it going to 10GHZ, which should have been obvious that it would have never been achievable.  There's also the issue of efficiency, as the P4 simply wasn't capable of doing as much at the "same" time as the Athlon 64 at the time, but when compared to the previous generation, both of them were at least an increase.

Apart from the very first P4's, at least, which couldn't even clock as high as the final P3's!

I look at it this way, it's better than the p1 and truly, I will never be able to afford anything like that.

on Dec 31, 2008

Well the EEE starts around $400 if you can handle Linux.  And these days a decent system can be built for about $500.

Since you're online in the first place, somehow I find it difficult to believe that there will never be a point in your life when you can afford $500 for a new computer-and perhaps more to the point I have to wonder what you spent on the P4-based system you have.

This doesn't mean I'm advocating that you upgrade now, though.  Perhaps if you were as far behind as I had been.

I'm online because I'm on a $50.00 a month plan, and I can just afford that, and if I get $500, I'd spend it fixing my illness, or buying clothes for my son, as I'm a single parent.. so I don't think there will be any future upgrade, not until we are using UFO's as cars, that, or until the T-Rex makes a come back

It Really depends on what you do with it. For surfing the net, reading forums, watching a movie etc. Most any PC will do. Tho more powerful ones will do it faster.

If you are a gamer, Graphics designer or you need to run many large programs at the same time, you may want a beefier PC, but even then it is not really manditory as long as the PC can handle the load.

Most PC users do not need a Super computer to surf the net or Email grandmas cookie recipe.

People would be wise to buy a PC that will do what you currently need but will still fit your needs as they grow. Theres need to go overboard just for the sake of throwing away money..

TG if your current PC does what you need... Then theres no reason to upgrade it.

HG, I'm a gamer, and everything now is so much slower, hell I remember when games were 200 mb, now they are on average, around 3 gig! and being bankrupt doesn't help

Maybe I'll get lucky somehow hehe plus I want to subscribe to WC! but with the conversion rate it will cost double, and I really REALLY want to do it!!!

You didn't answer my question.

How much was the P4 system?

on Dec 31, 2008

Sole Soul
You didn't answer my question.

How much was the P4 system?

All up just over $1000 which was better than the p1 which was nearly $2500 but I was with my first husband then, and could afford it.

on Dec 31, 2008

USD?  Or AUD?  The former would have been highway robbery, whereas the latter is just tourist price.

How long ago was the P1 bought?

on Dec 31, 2008

Over 10 years ago hehe

Nevermind, it's cool, we won't get anymore into my lack of funds in the topic but thanks for all the advice and suggestions
