Gamespot takes it's first look at the upcoming Entrenchment expansion for Sins of a Solar Empire.  They also have an exclusive game play video showing Entrenchment "in action".

"The wars among the Trader Emergency Coalition, the alien Vasari, and the human splinter faction known as the Advent continue to rage in Entrenchment. But as the years have passed, the multiple battle fronts have stabilized, forcing each faction to dig in. Technology has also advanced, and Entrenchment will introduce a new superunit, the star base, which Iron Clad says will radically alter Sins strategy and gameplay."

how do you kill minefields? it was said that scouts can locate them, but what can you do to still go through that area? otherwise the defending player can just mine the whole area, provided that is not cost prohibitive of course.

I'm just speculating, but that's how I would make them work.

They are invisible. If you've a scout in the same grav field (though I would prefer if you would need a scout near it, ie. a dedection radius on scouts) you can see them and thus attack them like everything else.

Probably best against them would be defense vessels/flakk frigates, guardian push ability.

I'd like to see the new assault units.

The torpedo cruisers are mostly to balance out the beefed up defenses. We don't know much about the third expansion, but that one was said to get new unit-toys

or maybe fighters/ squads? fast and maneuverable enough to evade the mines.

Minefields and subspace inhibitors will help. Starbases will have very long range as well, so unless you do a poor job of placing one, it should be able to deal with incoming fleets pretty well.

Still, I'm concerned that a player could simply fly right past a starbase and bombard the planet from the other side.  Regardless of the amount of damage inflicted on a fleet, if even a few ships with bombardment capabilities get through the entire starbase is negated.  That and the possibility that the starbase will be located by a planet with entry points on opposite sides, in which case a fleet could just pop in on the other side and totally avoid the starbase altogether.  I hope these tactics are being play tested!

You've still got the regular defenses. A starbase alone would be good, but probably not good enough.

As for entry points on opposite sides, (depending on the range os the SB) it may be better to place it somwhere in between.

I have a question. what were those thing near the end of the video they looked like moving missile launchers. if they are those things are sweet.

TEC got the Planet Shell thingy so they shouldn't be worried about fleets sneaking behind their starbase.  But I am not sure about the other two.

They are basically moving missile launchers. Each race is getting a defenses buster ship to help counter buffed turrets/hangars and starbases. The TEC is getting the Ogrov Torpedo Cruiser, which.. is basically a missile silo with an engine strapped on it.
