Every once and a while I want to point out some cool things Stardock is doing besides skinning, and since this is free I really thought some people here might enjoy it.  Yesterday, Stardock put out The Political Machine 2008 Express which is a free strategy game for the political season.

“Players play on the electoral map of the United States with the goal to gain the 270 electoral votes necessary to win the election. Players get 21 weeks (approximately the time candidates have between the primary season and the general election) to make speeches, raise money, buy advertisements, hire political operatives, appear on cable TV shows in order to woo voters to their side.

Political Machine Express also includes a print shop which allows players to create their own bobble heads, campaign pins and bumper stickers and print them out on their home printer. “

User can download the game from www.politicalmachine.com/express, or from the My Games tab in Impulse.

Looks like a good opportunity to take a taste test of PM08; I'll check it out on my lunch break today! EDIT: doesn't work properly on my crummy work machine - oh well, have to try at home sometime

Zu,

Well, I couldn't get the game screen to come up because the display was all wonky (to use a technical term) when it loaded. I could see the main menu and I could view options but not change them. I could log in to the server but after that I couldn't start a game (I'm guessing there was a button or something similar that would have allowed me to start a single-player game that didn't draw correctly or show up at all).

I DL'd at home and haven't gotten it to work yet either.  It wants me to open a couple of ports in my Firewall.  I have the ability to try some of what's suggested but, not port forwarding.  Ran into the same problem with SoSE and gave up trying to play the MP mode of play on it.  I'll see if this can work with just the ports opened.  This is an online only game as I understand it.

warreni,

Please locate your debug.err file.  This is usually in /my documents/my games/TPM2008Express.   Open the file in a text editor like Notepad.

Copy the contents (CTRL+C).

Then go to this forum  (the tech support forum for TPM2008):

https://forums.politicalmachine.com/forum/137

Create a new topic and paste (CTRL+V) the contents into the text of your post.

Then we can take a look at it and see if there is anything we can do.

In the meantime, please make sure your video card drivers are up to date.  This is a common cause of video-wonkiness.

Thanks.

Okay, I'll give it a go. I found the file with no trouble. Thanks!

Thank you for mentioning this.  I have now successfully played 2 games against the AI.  The first one I lost because I spent too much time trying to influence states I didn't have a chance in and the second one I did better.  It looks like a fun game!

Actually, I'm a union sympathiser... but I watch it for Whoopi Goldberg cos she's pro-fun.
