Although we had to take another break from the WinCustomize SkinCast last week, this week we are returning and will have a special guest, along with some huge prizes we are giving away.  For an upcoming episode of SkinCast, we will be talking with Darren McPhee, the Sr. Marketing Manager in Gaming for AMD.  We will be discussing several topics with Darren including AMD/ATI products, graphics, gaming, and much more.

We will also be taking user-submitted questions from the community for this episode, and the top three questions selected will win a prize.  We will select three of our favorite questions, and the users who submitted these questions will win one of the following:

  1. Grand Prize Favorite - ATI Radeon 4870 512mb video card courtesy of AMD/ATI.

  2. Second Favorite - Copy of Demigod, when released and beta access.

  3. Third Favorite -   Copy of Sins of a Solar Empire.

User submitted questions must be submitted as comments in this thread only, no other means will be accepted.  Questions can be related to ATI/AMD, skinning, Vista, technology, gaming, etc.  The deadline for submissions is 11:59pm EST, Wednesday, August 13th 2008.  Good luck and get those questions in!

*Employees, family, direct friends of Stardock, AMD/ATI, GPG, IC can ask questions, but are not eligible for prizes.

How can hardware and software companies work together more closely in order to improve the experience for the average gamer?

I now that touch screens are here, I just wanted to know if we going to have more deep technology than touch screens? And will ATI have to do anything with this changes?

is the best graphics card based on the amount of ram it has or is that determined by other features of it.

I'm very happy that now i have a chanse to ask developers of my favorit hardware brands, one question on that i cant find an answer for a long time. I want to ask about 64 bit calculations. All AMD processors now is 64 bit. i have 2 computers with AMD processors. its frequency 1600 hhz and 2200 hhz. This frequency is too small by comparison with Intel processors of same classes. But in fact this processors for example 1600 works like processors with 3000hhz from Intel corporation and AMD 2200 works like Intel processor with 4400 hhz. Plus possibility of safe overcloking up to 10%. I think its because AMD processors work in 64 bit mode, am i right? I don't understand how its works, cause my operating system and all applications like Photoshop, CorelDraw, Illustrator and other is 32 bit. I try to find an answer on this question on internet and special magazines but don't find anything. And i want ask, when we can use all ability of 64 calculations, and, how do you think, when other manufacturer of computer hardware and developers of software fully will go to 64 bit? I even don't hope on first prize. I just want answer on question that interests me for very and very long time....

Say I have the new top end GPU [HD 3870x2], then a few months pass and a new top end GPU comes out [HD 4870x2], when will the time come when we can still use our old top end card for physics or even crossfire. Having to pretty much throw the old one away would be absurd, why not be able to keep it and use it for something other than a paper weight? Thanks!

Who really has better cardes, Nvidia or ATI?

Technology has progressed quite a bit over the past several years. Having been in the industry what would you say has made the most advancement in the world of technology?

I have been thinking about a mighty VGA which produces a huge amount of data that even a PCI express 2.0 can't not handle, that VGA will have to use two PCI express 2.0 slots to transfer data .Nvidia seems to have more powerful VGAs,will Ati totally defeat Nvidia in the high-end market by releasing a far more powerful generation of VGAs like that? By the way,in my opinion,if that kind of VGAs was created, they should have built-in liquid nitrogen cooling system to keep them just below 100 celsius degree.

Seeing the progress so far and the miniaturization increasing I wonder and ask when/how do you predict that we will upgrade/evolve to real 3d holographic displays/projectors, and after that, what would take to embedd them into a notebook? And in this respect where are we today in terms of power output and which steps would be the necessary steps to get to the necessary output necessary to produce the holografic display? Thanks.

AMD previously announced that they would open-source their drivers, mainly for the benefit of the Linux community. Many trade secrets, however, cannot be revealed. Also, OpenGL 3.0 just released to moderate fanfare from developers. Since Windows is still the platform of choice for PC gamers, what unique role will open source software have against the very solid DirectX framework and highly-tuned proprietary drivers?

With the rapid advancement of technologies used in computers and programming I have found that affordable graphics cards are obsolete long before the other hardware on a given system. As a result more than a couple cards are utilized in a system before replacement of the system itself is necessary. Even many of the "cutting edge " cards have relatively short lives. What is being done to make future graphics cards capable of significant updates increasing their potential life before replacement is required to just keep up with current capabilities of programmers.

ATI surprised us all with the release of their 4800 series, effectively fighting their way back into the graphics card war against the green team (Nvidia.) My question is simple, yet honest: who do you think has the greater future? In terms of profit, fan base, and performance, who looks more promising in the long run, ATI, or Nvidia? Thank you.

In a brilliant move, ATI has Nvidia on the ropes by virtually locking up the mid-range video card market for gamers, forcing Nvidia to aggressively lower its prices. Does ATI plan to consolidate its position in the mid-range market, thereby creating the resources needed to push gaming graphics to the next level?
