They give it an 8!

The folks over at Bit-Tech.net have given their review of Sins, and they take a great in-depth looks at the gameplay and graphics.

A highlight of the review:

"Stardock and Ironclad are to be congratulated on many levels. Not only have they successfully created a game that merges the best parts of RTS and 4X games, they've also managed to create a game that doesn't require you to upgrade your PC to be able to run it. What's more, Stardock should be praised for not including any copy protection with the game. In their own words, the idea is to "reward customers for buying the game rather than inconvenience them with intrusive copy protection".

Doesn't requiring a unique CD-Key to get online, get patches, and get tech help via this forum count as copy protection? Not that it's a bad thing, but from my point of view, this game uses more copy protection than most games, which only require a unique CD-Key to play online.

The unique CD key is an incentive to buy the game, not copy protection. The CD key isn't actually an attempt at stopping the buyer from copying the game for a friend, seeing that the game can run without CD.
The CD key is in actual fact the reward - anyone who legitimately buys the game gets the updates and free tech help.
Or am I wrong?

But this is a GOOD kind of copy protection.

The type of copy protection they refer to is that whole DRM fiasco of limiting the number of installs and whatnot that's becoming so popular these days.

In todays world of DRM, SecuRom, Starforce, and myriad other stupidities... not really.

Most games require the CD in the drive to play. Many more games require online activation of some kind simply to play (not patch). I don't play some of my games half as often as I might, simply because the hassle of swapping the CD's out isn't something I'm interested in.

No, you aren't

Copy protection is not "online play protection". The only thing you need the cd key for is online play and patches. But unlike all DRM'ed games, you can install Sins anywhere without entering any serials, you can copy the disc however many times you want, you don't need to have it in the drive to play, it doesn't check if the disc is original or copied.. none of which are usually the case with DRM games

I think you read up on other forms of copy protection.

You beat me to it. Good job at explaining it. Anyway, given what I read I would have thought a nine (9) was in the cards.
