Fred Thompsons first debate
Published on October 8, 2007 By Island Dog In US Domestic
I really haven't paid too much attention to the early debates from either side, simply because it's too early for me to really care what they have been saying.  Tomorrow nights Republican debate will be an exception because this will be the first debate featuring the latest candidate to enter the race, Fred Thompson.  The debate takes place in Michigan and will be hosted by left-wing pundit Chris Matthews.

This is a good opportunity for Thompson to push ahead of the other front-runners.  Thompson isn't doing too bad in the polls, but his entrance was less than spectacular, and I think he's getting mixed reactions from the conservative base.  So Tuesdays debate will be very interesting as I'm sure the current top candidates are going to hit hard at Thompson as the "newcomer", but I think he could turn it around on them and come out on top.

It might have been nice if they got someone more respectable as the host.  Phooie.

I don't think MSNBC has anyone respectable.  Watching the news this morning I already see the media trying to bash Thompson.

He may not be running great in the polls, but he has the left scared silly. (Fred).

Funny the right will go in front of Chris Matthews, someone that has made his position clear, he hates the right, yet the left will not go to Fox where Brit Hume a very honorable man would be the moderator.

Here's what the AD sees.

Guilliani is going to continue down hill.
Romney is going to remain flat.
McCain will level off.

I look to see Huckabee and Thompson to see significant rise.

as for the others they will remain 'others.'

Now I watch and see how full of crap I am

Yes, I thought the same thing.

I'd love to see the lefties debate on Fox News but I think my beloved 0-5 Miami Dolphins have a better chance of winning the Super Bowl then us seeing Clinton, Obama and the rest of the gang on stage taking questions from someone who won't let them do the politician side step all night. Was it just me or did Ron Paul seem like a babbling moron last night. I know he has done well in the first couple of debates but last night it just seemed to me that he was more concerned with the volume of his voice then what he was acutally saying.

Ron Paul has seemed like a babbling moron more often then not. I agree with some of his views but he doesn't have a prayer in getting the GOP nomination. He simply cannot deliver his message with any clarity. He seems to be speaking from a different world with no way to articulate his views.

And again I don't think Ron Paul has done well PERIOD. He is unorganized, missed opportunities, and lacking the ability of delivery in speaking.

Reminds me of the smart kid in school hyped up on sugar forced to stand still. He has answers but speaks before thinking.

I think all the GOP candidates need to stop finger pointing each other and start explaining how/what they are going to do for the country. People obviously don’t care about past performance (Hillary and the national healthcare issue back in the 90’s comes to mind), they want to know what you are going to do right now. To me at least, none of these candidates seem to be really getting behind a particular issue or two, inciting passion. Hillary is already buying votes with money for newborns, private 401k’s, and health care, and she hasn’t even got past the primaries yet. If she is elected it won’t matter if these things aren’t passed as long as it looks like congress couldn’t agree, and short memory voters will have forgotten the campaign promises. Anyone that brings up the issue will be labeled a Hillary hater backed by partisan politics. She’s smart.

I think the GOP would benefit in the immigration arena, and the economy. The economy is really a success story despite the war, with a few exceptions such as the mortgage debacle. Perhaps a push on finance reform for mortgage lenders would be a start. I’ve heard all these things mentioned, sure, but nothing detailed. How about some optimistic views for a change? Give us some good news.

The war is unpopular as most Americans have shown the world; they have no stomach for it (I often wonder how the world would have fared in 1941 with today’s social conscience). All the candidates will have to cross this bridge before the presidential election and state their position. Personally, my advice to them, GOP or Dem, would be to hold off as much as possible. So much could change in a year. If a major breakthrough or devastating terrorist attack occurs here at home, the person that wants to pull the troops is going to be seen as “cut and run”. If nothing happens (no progress) it would be easy to be the hero and bring the boys (and girls) home (no time-tables, please). But I would save that till the end of the campaign. Just have a plan up your sleeve.
