Creating a Sidebar Gadget with DesktopX
Published on June 21, 2007 By Island Dog In WinCustomize News

Earlier this week the DesktopX 3.5 beta was released to Object Desktop subscribers. DesktopX 3.5 now supports exporting your creations as Sidebar Gadgets for use in Windows Vista. I made a quick video demo showing you step-by-step how simple it is to create an object with DesktopX, and then export it as a Sidebar Gadget.

It took less than 3 minutes from start to finish to create an internet shortcut and export it as a Sidebar Gadget. Although DesktopX is capable of creating far more powerful objects, this demo will give you an idea how things work with the latest beta release.

Sorry to keep asking this but; is there new events for when the gadget docks and undocks? Any way of detecting the dock state? Any way of adding a settings dialog windows?

Not yet.

Ok. Is that not coming in DX3.5?

Hi Thomassen: "docked" / "undocked" state switching isn't something we're planning for 3.5 at this time, but we are definitely planning on adding support for it, and it is indeed possible.

That's great news.
The sidebar doesn't allow to much space to be used so it'd be good to be able to expand when possible.

How about the flyout? ...would it perhaps be enough to expand the size of the gadget and it'd overflow the sidebar? hm... that could perhaps allow for nice flyouts as I'm not too impressed by the glassy container the sidebar gadgets use for when a flyout menu appears.

Bringing up Stardock Central and Object Desktop -I still see only Desktop Professional 3.4(.006 which I've installed but no DX 3.5. Sorry, but am I missing it somewhere else.

Thanks, Jim Sabshin

That is the beta of 3.5.  It'll *really* be 3.5 when it's out of beta.
