Raise your hand if you got Vista!
Published on January 31, 2007 By Island Dog In Personal Computing

Windows Vista has been officially released, and I am curious how many of our members now have Vista.  Did you go out and actually purchase it, order online, or did you obtain it from beta testing, or something like a MSDN subscription?

I know in Orlando and some other places certain stores were opening at 10pm for a midnight launch, did anyone happen to snag a late night copy?

I got a free version of Vista Business and Office 2007 from participating in www.powertogether.com.

Hopefully it'll be there when I get home from Budapest.  I'll probably upgrade to Ultimate after a new vid card.

Just got my copy of Vista Ultimate. Bought and OEM System Builder version, much much cheaper than anything else. That and Office Standard.

Most likely I will get it some day when I need a new computer. Hopefully that will be a long time from now!

As a rule I don't buy a new OS before the first service pack. Sometimes a lot later than that. I intended to wait for Vista and skip XP entirely, but they started chucking out software that required it. I figure you'll be seeing the same thing with Vista within the year.

If there's something I really, really want that requires Vista, I'll upgrade. Sans that, I'll at least wait until the first service pack. If they don't offer me a significant reason, maybe not even then. So far from what I've read, I don't have a lot of incentive.

Vista is basically a very expensive service pack for windows XP.

Certainly, as much as a GT40 is just an update to a Model T, yep, same company [Ford]...and both even have 4 wheels...

I have Vista running on 4 machines, no problems. I am really enjoying using it.

It is possible to do a clean installation with an Upgrade version of Vista. Launch the Vista installation from within XP. Select Install Now and then select clean installation option.

Vista then stuffs everything from your old XP installation (and I do mean everything; software, drivers, and XP OS itself), into a folder called "Windows.old". Then Vista installs to the remaining free space on you hard drive/partition. When it's complete and Vista boots up, you can go to the folder called "Windows.old" and delete it. Presto! clean installation of Vista with no trace of the old XP OS.

Got Ultimate running now. Works like a charm, except Photoshop being more slow than on XP.

I should be getting some kinda skin done and working for Vista I suppose, gonna have to figure out how to make it look good on both XP and Vista.

I am using the CS3 beta on Vista, so I haven't installed my regular version of Photoshop yet.

I will by this time next week...

Ordered a new machine from HP with Ultimate Wednesday because, although, I don't need a new computer, it would be more cost effective to buy one built around Vista rather than buying the OS and any compatible peripherals/software/accessories separately. I usually build my own so I was genuinely shocked at the branded prices out there now...let's say they made me an offer I couldn't refuse! I've already been running all the pre-release candidates and the jury's still out...of course, it took awhile to get completely comfortable with XP too...

Vista now installed   Everything seems lots faster than RC2 or XP. The install took just 22mins - but that was after spending 5 hrs wrestling with a new hard-drive. I was going to transfer my existing XP installation to the new drive but the damned thing just refused to boot... I gave up and did a clean install. I need dual boot so I can run games in XP, Vista drivers are not up to the job yet.

So here's my Vista info:

Darned processor ruined my rating - the graphics are at 5.9 and hard-drive 5.6...

Hehe, you'll find this funny. I've uploaded that pic to my album in XP, in Vista everytime I clicked on 'Add Photo' IE crashed

Ordered OEM versions (2 Home Premium) the other day, should be here next week.

Office 2007 small business (trial) currently running on RC2 (build 5744) on both desktop and notebook without issues now that ATI released drivers.

If the final release is optimized (which I assume it is) beyond RC2, then my computing experience will be great.
