I realized my main desktop PC, which is also my gaming PC, is well over 5 years old.  It's still handling most games quite well, and for something I built for around $600 I can't complain at all.

The basics:

  • AMD Quad-core 3.0ghz
  • ATI HD5700 video card
  • 8GB RAM
  • SSD for mostly OS and most used apps
  • HDD for data and everything else

I really haven't done much for upgrades aside from the SSD, which was a great improvement.  I'm thinking about putting together a Mini-ITX system, but definitely in no kind of rush to do another build.

How long has your current PC lasted, and do you have any plans to replace?

My main rig has lasted 3 years. I went outside of my norm and didn't go desktop. While I don't regret it, since the wife and I have a house we aren't planning on moving from soon, I'm going back to a desktop.

  • Asus G74Sx
  • CPU: Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-2630QM CPU @ 2.00GHz
  • GPU: GeForce GTX 560M
  • Memory: 12.00 GB RAM

However, I am planning on upgrading. Right now I have the case picked out, and I know I'm going to go with an Intel CPU, and nVidia GPU again. My previous rig was an AMD CPU and GPU, but I've really liked Intel and nVidia this time, hence why I am more than likely choosing them again on my next build.

Update...

Still waiting on the ram ...and the PSU ... so have essentially done everything I can prior to them turning up... including cannibalizing the existing for a couple of HDs [platters] and a burner.

The OS [and primary games] will live directly 'on' the MoBo via an M.2 512gig 'stick' that doesn't use a PCIe slot....only it's through-put.

Only other change from the spec was that since the Case isn't designed for the eATX I've gone for a standard ATX ... the ASUS X99 Deluxe ...

not a lot different to the Extreme... and in a couple of ways - better ...
