I’ve been watching the news about 3D printers for a while, and one of the reasons is the very cool ability in Galactic Civilizations III that allows you to print your ship designs with a 3D printer.  Most people think 3D printers aren’t affordable at least for the general consumer, and in most cases they are exactly right.  However, within the next year we should be seeing several consumer-level 3D printers available for just a few hundred dollars or less.

I borrowed that image from Brad’s Twitter feed of a GalCiv 3 ship design printed in a 3D printer.  That’s just a basic print, but the premise of something like this is exciting.

As mentioned above, there’s some affordable 3D printers headed our way soon.

Here’s a couple I’ve been reading about.

With more people using crowdfunding to get their 3D printers to market, and other companies investing in them as well, I think we’ll see a big market for these in the near future.

I wouldn't get a 3D printer, can't think of one thing I would want to print.  Yeah I know, sad, but I would save money.

god-given

   [gädgiv′ən]

adjective

  1. The definition of god given refers to something, usually a talent or ability, that is either innate (not learned) or that is so extraordinary that it could only have come from a higher power.

An example of God-given talent is the skill that the best Olympic athlete has within his field.

Saying a right is god-given is another way of saying it is a natural right. As if god created the universe then any rules inherent in the universe are obviously intended to exist by him. In the case of firearms they are referring to a natural right to freedom and self defense. Now you know.

There's NO such thing as a God given right

Yes I know. That's why I put a "rolling eyes" smiley after the comment. It was meant as a "tongue in check" remark.

This ^ coming from a person who started a psychpathic following on forums where the lunatic fringe frequently frequent.  Keep going like that and you're going to confuse yourself, let alone others, and that would likely mean your expulsion from The Collective.  You can't be Psychopathic AND tongue-in-cheek at the same time, so really, you need to decide which you are before they boot you for infecting the Collective Consciousness with indecisiveness.  And no time to procrastinate... they don't like that, either.

Seriously, though, I had figured that.  However, I just wanted to say my piece about 3D printers being used for nefarious purposes and how they need to be regulated so the less than lawful - idiots, too - cannot use them to manufacture weapons and the like.  Society has too many reasons to exact vengeance, and giving the aggrieved even easier access to guns would result in even more school yard shootings... not to mention street and gang violence escalating because they're emboldened behind a firearm.

Given the spate of recent school yard shooting, the escalation of gang wars and armed robberies over the years, for anyone to say US society is a safer place with civilians owning/having easy access guns is sheer lunacy... to put it as politely as I can.

Anyway, enough of that, we're supposed to be discussing 3D printers.

I dunno, Philly, wot is we gonna do with you?  I mean, c'mon, man, fire up yer imagination and come up with something you'd really, really like but could never afford, etc.

I will have to admit thay my wish for medical 3D printing has an ulterior motive behind it. Sure, let's have 3D printing to assist the medical fraternity with manufactured body parts, thus saving lives with shortened transplant waiting lists, but me, I just wanna print all the body parts required so's I can sew them together to make me a couple of hookers. Yes, it sounds a bit Frankensteinish, I know, but they could then bring home the bacon and make me a very happy bloke in 'so many' more ways.

Never thought of myself as being a pimp before, but hey, times is hard and ends aren't meeting as well as they used to.  S'pose the other thing I'd have to print is Viagra, otherwise the happiness would be purely monetary, and I do seek much more to life than a few bucks to tide me over.

I couldn't have said it better myself.  An quick and easy way to disprove starkers is to say that he has a choice to do what he wishes with his life, as this is a god given right.  He even has the choice to follow the law, much to the sadness of authoritarians everywhere.

I'll just print my own overly attractive sex/kitchen slaves, no need to buy some time with yours.  It's going to the the newest version of "free love", with a technical twist.

I'd have a go at printing Meccano components.....

....and bits of plastic kit models...

I could even make 'spares' for the 1/7th scale Fuel engined RC Red Bull F1 I'm building....might mean a $2000 car will last longer...

I'd have a go at printing Meccano components.....

I had much fun with a Meccano set as a lad.  Many a Winter's hour in the UK was spent building various models, many of them motorised with the little battery operated motors I'd accumulated as another kit was added.  Come the end I had quite a comprehensive set and could make just about every model the user manuals portrayed.  Sadly, it was too big an item to bring with when the family up and moved to Oz, so it was left with a cousin who loved that sort of thing.

and here I am throwing another fuel can on the fire,

there is another kickstarter for another LARGER build volume fused fillament fabrication printer (the build volumes that are on offer are 15 INCH by 15 INCH by 15 INCH (the smaller size) or 20 INCH by 20 INCH by 20 INCH (the larger size)

and here is the ks link

btw islanddog, both the printers you linked were cancelled in the threads

I still have mine.... mostly a Number 10 [collected] with a couple of other sets.  Bought a Kingchrome tool box [in wood] just recently to house it better....really looks the part too...

BTW...I actually got my head around how a car's diff works....when I was 10 ... by making one...

on Jul 23, 2014

No thanks, not interested. I don't need plastic toy heads lying around the house.

As far as this "making a gun" issue, it would be illegal because you need a background check done to even purchase a gun in this country, let alone make a stupid "plastic" one that would probably blow up in your hand if you fired it. If you made one without advanced permission you would be in violation of the law and you'd also have to incorporate a serial number of some sort on the gun and register it if you're doing things legally.

But the again, there are a lot of stupid people in the world....

Lucky sod!  Of all the toys I had as a kid, my Meccano sets are the only ones I'd love to still have... that and the joke dog turd [complete with artificial fly for authenticity] I used to trick the old girl next door.

That's the 'chest' ....as I said...works a treat....and less than a 1/4th the price of a 'replica' 10 chest made by some guys in India....another option I was considering...

on Jul 24, 2014

My grandfather has a similar looking chest that originally belonged to a jeweler.  He used it to store tools and nick knacks in his shed.  As a kid I was always fascinated by it because of its decorative veneers and antique locks and handles.... not to mention all the stuff he used to keep in it.  At 6 or 7, maybe 8, I didn't understand what a lot of it was for, but it was sure fun pulling it all out and inventing uses.

Funnily enough, when speaking about chests, the guy my mother married after dad died had been a long-term family friend, and he gave me an old seamans chest that converted into a sloping desktop when opened and had secret compartments, etc.  It'd be worth quite a bit of money these days, largely because of its decorative exterior, all done in a parquetry design using different timber veneers.  Again, it was something I had to leave behind due to the luggage limit we had to come under.

As for your chest, I could use something along those lines now. It would go nicely in my man cave for various PC bits n' pieces and look quite the furniture piece.  Nice!!!

Parquetry is what's on floors....decorative inlays are called marquetry...

I'm an architeque...I know lots of these weird words....

There are a lot of random unbacked statistics being posted here about the frequency of proper vs improper gun usage.   I see a good number o them are inaccurate as well.

Regardless, there is a broader issue at stake here.  There was a man a while back who espoused that civilians were not to be trusted with firearms. People of that age backed that mentality in mass.  Then the Holocaust happened.   Those who are not students of history are doomed to repeat it.
