It seems “big” phones and devices are now in as we have a bunch of devices arriving that some are calling “phablets”.  The latest is the Lumia 1520 which is a 6-inch Windows Phone device with a 1080p display and 20mp camera.1200-nokia_lumia_1520_group-shot_1

I have a Lumia 920 and it was quite the size upgrade from the iPhone.  I haven’t held a device of this size yet, but I’m curious if it’s too big or if it hits the right size spot.  Engadget has a great review up with more detail on the 1520.

Anybody thinking about upgrading to something like this?  What do you think about the size?

hey starkers!

Hey John... long time no see  But then that's my fault for being AWOL for so long.  Yeah, I just needed a break to get my head together, among other things.

The 2520 I saw in-store was quite impressive and I definitely will get one... eventually.  My current project is a new desktop build.  I decided to get away from the AMD's with this one, though.  I'm going Intel i7 4770K on a Gigabyte GA-Z87X-UD5H with 32Gb of Kingston 2400mhz RAM and Win 8.1 on a 512Gb Samsung 840 Pro SSD.  I know you're not much of a fan of Thermaltake cases, but this build will be housed in a Thermaltake Level 10 Full Tower with hot swappable drive bays and oodles of room for large graphics cards, etc.  I can currently get a Gigabyte GTX770 4Gb for AU$320, which currently is an excellent price for such a beast, so I'm thinking of running 2 in SLI instead of a single GTX780 @ 690.

Anyhow, that won't be finished for a while... finances and all that, so my Nokia Lumia 2520 is a way off yet.  I also like the idea of the 1520 for a phone.  While my sister and other family members have switched from Windows phones to the Samsung Note II, I like the Windows phones better and will stick with them over going Android or IOS

Big phones are great especially for an aging guy like me that has eyes like Mr. Magoo. That being said I probably won't be buying any until clothes manufactures begin making tablet pockets. They are just to hard to carry around in the line of work I do.

Telling me the big phones are here

Well I had a good look at a BIG smart phone today and I'm gobsmacked at the screen real estate.  I thought my mother, sister and niece had Samsung Galaxy Note II's.  I was mistaken!  They have the Samsung Galaxy Note 8... which has a massive 8" screen and comes with a stylus type pen which draws, paints, takes notes, etc, etc.  If only they did it as a W8 phone.  Currently it's only Android and I'm not keen on switching to that.  Still, it is a nice piece of hardware, just the same.

I'll be able to upgrade my phone this year.  I'd get a 1520 definitely, but I'm sure we'll see some other good stuff this year too.

Yeah, the 1520 appears to be the 'must have' phone for 2014.  Well in my book it is.  I've seen some nice units with lots of hardware appeal, but then I turn 'em on and they're Andoid, and that's just not my cup of tea.  Now Android is obviously a good phone OS because it is streets ahead in market share, but I'll stick with a Nokia Lumia with W8.

I went and looked at the 1520, and wow.  That screen is something else.  It is a big device, but that isn't necessarily a bad thing.

It's going to be hard not to get this.
