A new Start8 1.29 beta is available for Start8 and Object Desktop customers from their store account page at

  • Updated for Windows 8.1 RTM compatibility
  • Added self-contained menu skinning for Windows 8/8.1(though WindowBlinds skins will still work globally). See the "Which theme do you want to use" dropdown for an example. A library section for new ones is available at https://www.wincustomize.com/explore/start8_menus.
  • The included Start8ThemeEdit.exe (in the application folder) can be used to create new Start8 menu skins.
  • New default Start button image. The Windows logo is no longer available as a default selection.
  • New features under Control for "Start button shows Windows 8 menu unless docked" and "Start button shows Start8 menu unless in tablet mode" for slate and convertible machines respectively. Users with those machines must manually select one of those options, if they wish to use them.
  • Windows 8-style start menu options are available on Windows 8.1 RTM.
  • There are additional options for keeping the taskbar visible and defaulting to the Application view.
  • Additional fixes.

Awesome! So, I would assume that since we can now skin the start menu, there must be a way to use said menu, rather than the one supplied with WindowBlinds?

Is there a way  for someone (like me for instance) to create start menus without any version 8 programs?

You just pick the theme from the drop down in the Start8 UI.  If Start8 is set to use the standard Start8 themes then with WB running it will use the WB skin, but if you pick a skin that's not the default theme (i.e. has a theme file) then it will use that over the WB one.

You did reboot after installing?

As if you didn't then it will not work until it has been rebooted.

There are content margins on the shutdown button, so that might work, but it is not something I have tried myself.

The editor live edits the file and tells Start8 to reload the theme, so without Start8 installed there would be no way to see the results.

The content margins adjustment for the start menu shutdown button text does not work Neil. It works in Windows 7, but not in Windows 8.

This is about Start8 themes.

@ Neil: So will this MAJOR issue for skinners with the Shutdown Text displaying ever be fixed ???

ALL The skinners want/need the option to take it away

You know, it's really hard to help out around here sometimes.
