Before I left on vacation I went and bought myself a late birthday present which was the Nokia Lumia 920 smartphone running Windows Phone 8.  It was a decision between the iPhone 5 and the Lumia 920.  I’ve mostly used iPhones over the past few years, but I did have a Windows Phone 7 device as well.  I liked it, but too many quirks made me return to the iPhone.

I’ve been watching closely the progress of Windows Phone 8, and between that and the hardware from Nokia, I decided to take another plunge into Windows Phone.  I’m certainly glad I did.

Most of the quirks I had with Windows Phone 7 were resolved in WP8, and the hardware side is so much better than the iPhone at half the price (on contract).  The device is bigger than the iPhone with a beautiful 4.5” display.  Some reviewers like to point out the 920 is “big”, but that’s a plus in my book as the larger screen area is much easier on the eyes.

I’ll go into Windows Phone 8 in another article, but it’s no problem for me to say this is much better than the stale iOS platform.  Live Tiles are a great feature, integration with Office and SkyDrive is done right, and overall it’s a smooth experience.

I’ve only had it a short time, so I’ll keep writing about it, but if you are in the market for a new smartphone, give this one a look.

Nothing wrong with Google services. Have you even tried using a Android based phone yet Island Dog?

Have you?  Oh wait.....no......"As for myself I have never owned a smartphone. Too rich for my blood. ".    I am curious.  What would ID answering your question do for you today?  Perhaps convince you to go out and actually buy one?

Seriously kona, what's in these "trolling attempts" for you?  Do you get some kind of kick out it?  I am curious after all......

Evidence suggests you are the only one trolling here. You haven't been here long enough to understand how I come across or how I act on the boards. Ask some old timers. They will say it's just me being me. Now as I said before I will go about ignoring you since you just don't get it.

Android sucks and is a generic OS, but of course that's just my personal opinion.

I'M the one trolling?  Was that you who entered into this thread and posted helpful info for people considering this phone?  Was it you who posted a lengthy hands-on with the device in question and continues to seek to confirm info for those asking for it?  No.......guess again.....troll.

ah, the good old times.

but you are right, the_Monk should really read some old posts of you to see how your character is.

here's a particulary nice thread. kona was bragging about his great (imaginary) Mac for a few days. offers to make some screenshots to show how it looks, but claims not to know how to do it, so unfortunately there would be none. people explain him how to do a screenshot. kona decides his Mac is crap and has to be sold tomorrow. no screenshots.

it's kinda funny and sad at the same time, because all these days he was bragging pretty much everybody except himself knew that he never owned a Mac.

Exactly, thanks.

I recall that thread. That was when I owned that old G4 tower. I really did own a Mac. Just didn't know how to post a screen shot. Sold it because I wanted to go back to Windows.

the_Monk is a good guy.  Opinionated perhaps (who's not?), but good.  So is Kona.  Neither is a troll or threat to civility, and I trust will not become such.

Merry Christmas & Happy New Year.

for once, ID and I agree on something.

as for kona saying he's just being kona, he's right. he argues about most anything without any personal knowledge of the subject.

as for the phone......well, let's just say i've spoken to a nokia rep and i now know what i need to do in order to get the phone calendar to suffice for me. i have her number and when i get another 920 tomorrow, we'll see what happens. regarding the bank app, hopefully they develop one soon but i'm not holding my breath.

A mobile banking app has saved my bacon on more than one occasion.  Wouldn't go without it now.

I guess that's a matter of personal preference. C|net has released its list of best phones of 2012 and its no surprise that my Galaxy S3 and your Nokia 920 both made the list. I liked the Note 2, but it was so large that it was totally obnoxious.

Aside from the version fragmentation, it really depends on what you're looking for in a phone. Android works just fine for me, and personally I can't stand the metro UI. It (and Win8 on the desktop) does have some nice technology under the covers though.

okay, kids, i bought another 920 today and so far almost everything seems to be working just fine. i'm still not completely happy with the photo section regarding creation of folders but i can work around that using skydrive. all's well that ends well. as they say.

@ MadDeez,

Glad to hear you seem to be getting your issues worked out.  If you don't mind my asking, what was it the Nokia rep suggested to you with regard to the calendar?   It certainly seemed to me that there was no way to change the size of the monthly view or change it from displaying those latin phrases to actually displaying microscopic printed sections of your own appointments.  Any detail you could provide with regard to that info would I'm sure also help others maybe having the same issue.

on Dec 18, 2012

well, monk, it was pretty simple. instead of allowing everything to be imported from my live account, i entered all my contacts manually. the birthdays of people in my contacts list are now showing in the calendar. about the monthly view, i can live with it being so small. like you said, that view doesn't get used very often. all this hubbub with buying it, returning it, and buying it again has made the phone cost me 35 bucks (the restocking fee) more than it should've but that is the price for my impatience. all in all, the 920 is a great phone. i'm glad i have it.....again.

on Dec 18, 2012

Thank you for the clarification.  I had assumed there wasn't much that could be done about the calendar "monthly view".   I do think MS should give us the option of displaying our actual appointment data there as well as the then necessary zoom option.  Who knows, maybe we'll get lucky and get those changes in a future update (MS is actually pretty good about providing updates) and Nokia has sent several updates through the marketplace to their proprietary apps already so I'm not too worried about things not getting fixed.

One issue I am currently having is with the game "Lets Golf 2".  I was able to purchase the game and because it is 120MB in size it of course wants to download via WiFi.  No problems there, it shows it going through the download but then throws an error message when "installing" asking me to update my phone and hit "retry".  Apparantly I am not the only Lumia 920 owner having that issue because if you check the "reviews" for the game there are at least 2 others with the same issue.  I am in the process of contacting the devs (gameloft) for help.

Thanks again for updating your issue etc.
