Before I left on vacation I went and bought myself a late birthday present which was the Nokia Lumia 920 smartphone running Windows Phone 8.  It was a decision between the iPhone 5 and the Lumia 920.  I’ve mostly used iPhones over the past few years, but I did have a Windows Phone 7 device as well.  I liked it, but too many quirks made me return to the iPhone.

I’ve been watching closely the progress of Windows Phone 8, and between that and the hardware from Nokia, I decided to take another plunge into Windows Phone.  I’m certainly glad I did.

lumia920

Most of the quirks I had with Windows Phone 7 were resolved in WP8, and the hardware side is so much better than the iPhone at half the price (on contract).  The device is bigger than the iPhone with a beautiful 4.5” display.  Some reviewers like to point out the 920 is “big”, but that’s a plus in my book as the larger screen area is much easier on the eyes.

I’ll go into Windows Phone 8 in another article, but it’s no problem for me to say this is much better than the stale iOS platform.  Live Tiles are a great feature, integration with Office and SkyDrive is done right, and overall it’s a smooth experience.

I’ve only had it a short time, so I’ll keep writing about it, but if you are in the market for a new smartphone, give this one a look.

Cloud and social integration.

It isn't trying to mash those contacts all together is it? For instance, it is not going to try and take all my facebook contacts and try to push them to my gmail address book is it? Or even worse, share any of my gmail data with Facebook??

Went and fondled a 920 at the AT&T store during lunch today. Damn nice phone. You are definitely right about the fluidity of everything!

Seems like as far as calendar entries on the lock screen, it currently only shows the next one, is that correct? Or is there an option to display more that I missed?

@ the_Monk  SHADDUP!!!!

You know I want this phone!

You know HOW badly I want it! [e digicons]:'([/e]

You know I CAN'T afford it now!!!

Yet you stilll go ahead and write a glowing review that just makes my mouth water with jealous anticipation.

You are a cruel SOB... just so, so cruel!

However, I will forgive you... this time.... and probably the next review as well.

P.S.  Good review, BTW.

No the "people" tile in Windows Phone 8 won't force info from one account into another it just "collects" all of the info from all connected accounts in one place.  Of course that is only the default behaviour and one can "filter" out any/all of the other accounts if one wants only say the sim-card contacts shown in the "people" tile.

Yes at this point it does look like the "detailed" view for the calendar app will only give you the next appointment.  Third-party apps however like Groupon for example are able to utilize the lockscreen more and are even able to use the location services to populate your lockscreen with deals pertinent to you at your current location.

EDIT:

I'm sorry starkers......I will stop now...........trying to stop typing........trying......really....really trying........hehe

Awesome, perfectly acceptable that way!

Bummer, at this point, but with others being able to use more of it, sounds like something that either they may change, or perhaps some other app can take advantage of down the road and display differently.

For now I think I'll keep waiting, at least just a bit longer. It has been hard to resist upgrading, think this is the longest I've ever had a cell phone, and I do love new toys!

Hmmm, now this does not conjure a good mental picture, at all.  Fondled, eh?  And in an AT&T store, no less.

And you weren't worried about security or what other customers thought?

You realise those stores have recordable CCTV, don't you?

Hehe, I can see the embarrassment of it all now....

I have a phone. It sits on my desk and makes and receives what? Phone calls of course! I have a PC to do anything else I want to do. Texting? Hate it! I have a simple Net10 cell to carry with me in case of an emergency. It costs me fifteen dollars a month. Would not even have that except it was a necessity when my Mom passed because our land line was out and needed to communicate with family in Virginia. And guess who isn't rushing out to get Windows 8! You boys have fun with your expensive toys but to me a phone is a phone and a PC is a PC!!

Yeah, there's still a few old fossils around who prefer the abacus to compute... and a couple of cans on a string for a phone.

I was one of them not so long ago.  That's right, I never wanted or needed a mobile phone, never had a use for a tablet, either.  Then I got my first mobile because it was the only economical way to keep in touch with my step-daughter interstate, but a Smart phone was NEVER on the agenda, didn't need one of those at all... until my mother gifted me one.  Once I got my hands on that there was no holding me back... hmmm, touch.... just like on the tablet I'd gotten a couple of months earlier.

Hehe, the old fart got booted into the 21st century, and it didn't hurt much at all.  The thing that didn't need any prompting or arm twisting was purchasing Win 8.  I downloaded it the moment it became available and never regretted it.  So now all I need is the Lumina 920 and Surface to complete the tech triangle.
