A big congrats goes out to xmorg who has won the Fallen Enchantress “Design a Trait” contest!  His trait, Outlaw Connections, took the top spot!

“The Hero has spent some time with the lawless and knows a little about how to communicate with bandits. The Hero may recruit bandits he encounters in the wilds, at a small cost of gold and prestige.

Bandits can be disbanded and add to the population. The hero cannot propose to marry them.

Bandits may also equip bows and leather armor if the technology is available.”

Congrats again, and we can’t wait to see that trait in the game!

Congrats Xmorg...  I think they should randomly sneak your name into the game as a bandit leader.

Quoting Campaigner, reply 2Look, Island....95% of us are disappointed with the top 5 traits you chosed so it's embarrasing to see you try to hype it up like it's a big deal or something....(Congrats again, and we can't wait to see that trait in the game!)

I think this is mildly uncalled for, as island dog is really just trying to give congratulations to someone for winning a contest. While some of us may not agree with the choices of that contest, I am pretty sure being rude to the developers doesn't strength their relationship with the community. In all honesty, I feel like this trait would be better made into a faction trait similar to the green civic in SMAC allowed you to recruit mindworms.

The congratulation comes off as greatly exaggerated (to me atleast) compared to the effort (the quality of the trait). Like congratulating a kid in kindergarden for taking the milkcarton to the table when he does it of his own free will. Now take the milkcarton example and exchange the kid with a 12-yearold. If I were around that dinnertable and saw one of the parents congratulate a 12-yearold for bringing a milkcarton to the table then I would feel embarassed if I was part of that family.

Now... if those bandits that are hired have hidden status and you can attack any faction with them without repercussions diplomatically I'd find that be be pretty creative, hidden nationality status is a powerful tool because the target can't point his finger at just any body because he doesn't know who the source of the attack came from.

Can we maybe get a companion trait that lets you feed your citizens to wandering monsters to win their loyalty?

oh! and this too heheh.. yeah i'm lazy.

really, really like the idea of hired bandits or monsters being untraceable some how.

If that 12 year old kid got a top of the line ATI HD graphics card for working that milk carton, I'd say he is one bad muthafucka...and I'd congratulate him too.  Shiiiit.

Congrats to the winner,

Wasn't what I voted for however, didn't strike me as being particularly heroic to pay/hire bandits specifically indeed it seems quite mercernary to employ criminals.

but a vote is a vote and he obviously did get a lot of votes, so congrats.

Congrats, Xmorg.

A couple comments. I'd really love to see some hidden nationality mechanic associated with this trait. Probably some balancing issues if this trait was the only way to tap into it, though.

Also, I still think that the assassination trait was pretty fantastic. I'd love to see that one in, as well.

lol wow... I said something in this thread that has stuck on... hahaha...

This is cool.  I wish I had thought of it.

...er, aren't bandits useful only in the extremely early stages of the game? Will they be somehow buffed so that this trait will be worthwhile for a long period, or will it merely be something that is good until turn, say, 50?

Either way, congratulations.

on Apr 28, 2011

Well, if it's FE then maybe the game mechanics are better and the bandits will be useful longer or there will be more powerful bandits as the game goes on.

Actually, it could be an awesome trait if you could contract the bandits you hire to harass another faction - similar to SoaSE. Lord knows they can be a pain in the ass for my faction and it would be refreshing if you could get them to bug somebody else for a change. What do you guys think about that idea?

This sound like an interesting idea, though as I previously stated, this sounds more like a overall mechanic or faction trait than a unit trait. Honestly, I think that this trait opens a fairly interesting door, which reminds me a lot of a mechanic I loved in Rome: TW. For those who did not play that game, in Rome:TW, general units could hire mercenary units in the field at a higher recruitment cost and a higher maintenance cost. While your more powerful core armies tended to be comprised of your faction's troops, many of your armies would have several of these troops to bolster the ranks, and in some cases, you could have entire mercenary armies. However, as far as Elemental is concerned, I wonder if it would not be more interesting to have some kind of bandit camps that one could recruit various types of bandits that scale in relation to your current tech levels.
