Get away from my cereal!

HW2 (nice avatar, btw) I think doesn't cut it cause it was not as accessible as a lot of the games on that list. I know many people who have problems with the Z axis in their heads. And besides what I said in my past post, I feel that they cut out certain aspects that the original and Cataclysm got right, thus they moved forward in some respects and back in others.

BTW SINS made PG Gamer Magazine top 100 @ 85.

Annatar makes a point.

What I was just thinking too is that Supreme Commander came out around 2007. That game was a big step up with RTS games. It's sequel was weak, but the original gave you the same scope design that Sins uses (give or take) and I still play it to this day. I feel that it should have been there. Moreso than DoW, which, as I said earlier, doesn't do much more than Starcraft did for RTS games.

So SupCom deserves to be on the list more than DoW. And DoW "doesn't do much more than StarCraft did for RTS games".

Well....considering that Dawn of War and StarCraft did A HELL OF ALOT(!) to the RTS genre I'd say your just disappointed that the game you liked more (SupCom) didn't became more popular then DoW and SC.

As for Sins of a Solarempire, haven't played it yet. Though I believe I wouldn't like it. From Gamespys description of it it sounds too much like Homeworld. Slow'n'strategical.

on Feb 05, 2011

Actually, I played SC a lot. I also played DoW a lot, but not as much as SupCom or SC. I feel that SC did plenty, but felt that DoW didn't do as much as SC to push ahead. So it's not disappointment, just my opinion.

As for Sins and Homeworld, they're not that much alike.

Homeworld is played within a fairly tight scope, the relative size that you commonly find in RTS games.
Sins is played using planets interconnected by phase lanes which allow the playing area to become enormous.

Homeworld (I assume you mean the original) has equal vessels, minus a couple.
Sins has 'equivalent' vessels, but each race has a different balance and abilities that make them tactically unique.

Homeworld is truly 3-D, forcing you to consider all the options therein.
Sins is rendered in 3-D, but your commands within a gravity well are 2-D.

Homeworld has no planet management or such outside of the fleet (not counting the Complex mod for #2).
Sins is partially 4x, meaning that you have to manage your planets, including happiness (minor issue) and improvements (major issue).

I would agree that many maps on Sins push for a more slow and strategical play style, but small to medium maps can be rushed and there are speed options to get things going faster. I never felt Homeworld was terribly strategical, but I guess that can be a matter of relativity.

Edit: If I were to feel disappointed by anything, it would be that Conquest: Frontier Wars never got the recognition SC did. As one critic put it, it's 'what StarCraft should have been'. It's like a half way between SC and Sins. If anyone likes that idea, I recommend looking it up. They didn't have quite the production budget or advertising that Blizzard could pull off, but they produced a fun game.

I meant Homeworld II as that's the only Homeworld I've played. I got to an asteroid cluster where I fought some generic ships that was like medium in everything. Gotted +20% in something after I've killed some of'em I remember.

It was indeed 3D and complicated. Too much I say.

I remember a discussion on this forum where someone brought up Conquest: Frontier Wars. Was it you?

I've seen it listed in some list that I think was about "Ignored games". Conquest: Frontier Wars came out in 2001 which was two years after StarCraft: BroodWar hit and one year before WarCraft III so C:FW came in the PERFECT time between BroodWar and WarCraft III. So why did it fail?

Cause I only heard about it on forums or that list.

I do belive there is a sins demo hiding around here somewheres... try it out.

on Feb 07, 2011

at least sims didn't make it in

If you take "top" as being

  • good (i.e. still worth playing years aftyer release)
  • influential (set the tone for games of a similar nature)
  • sucessful

Then I think WoW scores highly on most of those so I can see why it made it to number 1

Lord Xia
Lot of those games were xbox ports.

By X-box port i meant primarily made for xbox then ported onto PC.

...In fact, the things you listed to start your commend is the only true way to determine a "top" game...

If Sales figures alone determine the "top games" then Deus Ex was a failure in the "only true way to determine a top game" and Call of Duty: Black Ops is the single greatest piece of art ever created.  I refuse to accept this.

Don't forget Deerhunter....it was a game that every reviewer agreed was completely awful, but it was a massive best seller because apparently is appealed to the casual gamers desire to shoot deer.

Still good sales do tell you a very important thing about the game, which is that it's very popular. And while there will always be exceptions, games are usually popular for a very good reason. It's only one variable to consider, but it's an important one.

If you were to remove any game that is on a console from that list, you'd also have to remove Knights of The Old Republic, Morrowind, Call of Duty, and several others.

Even Starcraft had a console version.
