Stardock has released version 1.1 which is a huge update to its fantasy strategy title, Elemental: War of Magic.

Elemental Lead Producer Derek Paxton (aka Kael) says, "The 1.1 patch for Elemental: War of Magic is an opportunity to enhance and refine the game. In a limited timeframe, the team was able to implement major features. As a result, the game has been rebalanced to remain fun and challenging throughout. It impacts nearly every aspect of gameplay, the interface and most significantly the role of Magic"

Full changelog is here, but highlights of this update are:

  • Global Mana System- Instead of having mana per unit, mana is a player resource.  Players must balance between using their mana to enchant their cities and units, summoning creatures, attacking their enemies, or saving up for powerful late game spells.
  • New Spells- New spellbooks and spells have been added to make magic more unique and strategic.  High level spells can wipe out cities, raise volcanoes and hit enemy armies with powerful tornados that scatter their units across the countryside.
  • Population as a resource- Players must consider how their population should be used.  Population is the primary factor for the player's economy through taxes and each improvement and unit the player builds requires population.  Players have to choose if they want to allocate people to a study researching techs, a workshop producing materials or as a scout to explore the world.
  • Dramatic update to the UI- Nearly every screen and interface has been improved to be more useful and intuitive for the player.  Important information has been brought to the main interface, and greater detail is provided in the detail screens so the player can see exactly how his empire is running.
  • Rebalance of the game- The core stat mechanics were reworked and every unit, equipment and monster stat was reviewed and tweaked to make for a more balanced and even playing experience.

Current players can update now via the Impulse client.  Players who purchase the game by December 31, 2010 are eligible to receive the first expansion pack free of charge. Elemental: War of Magic is available at most retail outlets or can be purchased and downloaded via Impulse at www.elementalgame.com.

the game is really more stable i finaly finished a game of elemental

I have been playing a game for 9 hours over the last week on 1.09s and it was very nice, other than some slow down on tactical battles, which had grown large.

I have just started a game and have been playing for a couple hours and it is just marvelous IMO.

Congratz to the amazing Stardock!

I think this really takes Elemental from the unfortunately somewhat lackluster experience it was to what was highly anticipated.  Been playing the new version for a few hours now and everything just feels tighter, more intuitive, and just plain more fun.  Especially the magic system.  There are actually a bunch of spells I want now!  Though I'd love to see the spellbooks fleshed out just a bit more, or a couple more "special" spellbooks added.

All that being said, kudos.  I'm definitely enjoying the game.

I haven't touched on the single player, but looking at the multiplayer which was already flawed with bugs and glitches, it would appear that the Elemental War of Magic team took an already functional game with great potential and... broke it.  It is now officially impossible to do anything in multiplayer.  Its glitchy, instead of fixing the bugs of the game more complications were added and now its even glitchier and jerkier than before.  Its impossible to save and its impossible to uninstall the patch.  Pretty disappointing.

I really enjoyed the battery of Betas you guys pumped out, I wish you could have done it when I was out of work and had some time to play test!

So far like 20 turns in, it seems stable!! Warmer , better, more like the game I had in mind when I first checked in on Elemental, AUG of 2009! Beta test were as fun as a prayer string of razor blades  I really wish you had jumped and slammed out the beta test back then.

Just wanted to say thanks guys and gals and I am hoping for a no CTD experience, if I have one I will be posting to support as the old procedure set down has given back some useable data! I hope you all have a Merry Christmas   OH yea thanks for making the game more of what it should be, and enjoyable as it stands. I actually dream of my games again!!

How do you get the update from Impulse?  I feel stupid, but I went there and only found a way to buy the game, which I already own.

open Impulse, go to the "my games" tab, highlight Elemental and click update in the lower right corner.

Hmmm.  So I went to the http://www.impulsedriven.com/download   link that Stardock provides in the update banner.  There is no "my games" tab.  I removed the /download on the link and went to http://www.impulsedriven.com/  and there is no such thing, either.

It almost sounds like you refer to some kind of Impulse client application.  If so, how do you get it?...

...ahh, "free download" gets their client.  As soon as I figure out how to get a valid login/password with impulse, I will be in business.

Thanks for getting me to look a little harder.

Started yesterday at 7 PM...returned in the reality at midnight when my cat started asking for food.. (and realised that I skipped my own dinner!)

Good job! Now is a great game!

Yay, me happy, been playing the betas, glad it's finally out.  At first the change to having spells take all your action points left annoyed me, but it makes playing a spell caster more of a challenge which is not a bad thing.  Was playing last night, wanted to be a spell casting monster from the get go but with two earth shards my offensive spells just weren't there, so I had to switch tactics.  At first I was annoyed, then I realized how cool that was.  Depending on how you start the game, the whole game can change, it's not the same every time.

Now I just can't wait to see what you guys come up with next.  More spells and more ways to personalize one's experienced would be cool.  Also, cloth map only mode still needs work.

Also, cloth map only mode still needs work.

We need also: Tactical Cloth Map. Something like playing 3D Chess? All the battlefield like cloth map, the units as figurines and no animation in them (cloth map, remember?). I do like how 3D battles look and such but I have found myself wishing that sometimes I'd love to play tactical battles like in a cloth map.

Non trollish mode off

The game has improved to a degree. I`m not convinced that the game is totally fixed. Its getting there however. I`m excited about the new features. So, with that said, keep going. The product is a whole lot better than it was. I`m truly encouraged by this new effort by Stardock.

Thank You

I bought Elemental on Launch. A Week later I stopped playing it because it was no longer fun. It was shallow and unbalanced. Making the experience drab across the board. A sad disappointment.

Enter v1.1

I just played 5 hours straight and only stopped because I have to go to work soon and should eat something. Oh. My. God. Such seemingly minor changes completely revitalized and improved the game. Everything feel so much more interesting and enjoyable now.

It's not perfect yet, but it definitely warrants the money I spent on it.
Stardock once again proves why their my favorite dev.
