I’m doing some research for WinCustomize and I have created a quick survey about wallpapers and WinCustomize.  I would appreciate it if WC members could take a moment and fill it out.  It will help us get a better picture on how to develop the future of WinCustomize.

WebGizmos

I do so get tired of the fractal bashing, obviously some people like them or my downloads tell a lie. All I was trying to say is all fractals are not created equally. I am, however, trying to delve into other areas and it's helpful to know what the majority wants and likes. Thanks for the input.
Frankief...Wasn't really bashing your work...it was a survey about wallpapers and I was referring to a type of wallpaper...not anyone in particular. Some of the stuff you do looks really good...it's just not something I would use on my desktop. Hell, even some of the stuff I do use doesn't stay on my desktop for to long. So don't take it personally...create for the reasons you want to and don't worry about everyone else. Someone will like what you do and use it.

Oh...and there are lots of other types of wallpapers I don't like...it just so happens that fractals are in abundance in the wallpaper gallery here...more so than anywhere else I look for walls.

While I may agree and disagree at the same time, the fact is that the majority of walls being posted are fractals, I will also go on to say that many of the fractals being posted are not good at all. It's funny how once someone attains the status of journeyman, they can post whatever they want. The fact is there just isn't anybody creating the type of walls you describe. I'll be the first to say that a painting beats out a fractal no holds barred. With the exception of TBC,  I haven't seen too many paintings here. SO for the mods that have declared their hatred of anything that wasn't painted, let's get serious here. We may as well include Bryce in this and how many times we see the same thing with a different color. I find this thread a little biased.

Being a Journeyman was something I used to strive for, it meant something and was something to be upheld, it meant you had a responsibility to the the community. Personally I think that should be a probationary period for the status with all works being moderated.

I have an idea, if you want to see other wallpapers, then I guess you should start making them. That's how I started. I didn't like the quality and knew I could do better.

BTW.   I totally agree with WebGizmos, there are not too many wallpapers worth downloading these days. I hardly download any at all, except for a couple of fractals and a couple others. I think maybe if people sent a PM to JAFO complaining about the quality of walls or one in particular, be it from a simple Apprentice or a Journeyman than maybe WC will start taking things a bit more seriously. I too will be the first to say that there is a marked difference in quality than when I joined 3 or 4 years ago.

Being a Journeyman was something I used to strive for, it meant something and was something to be upheld, it meant you had a responsibility to the the community. Personally I think that should be a probationary period for the staus with all works being moderated.

That probationary period would be from the rank of citizen to master apprentice. One assumes that when you have obtained the rank of journeyman, you can be trusted to not upload shitty work.

With rank, comes a responsibility to be careful what you upload, though....self moderation so to speak. It's my job consider this when uploading any work. I need to ask myself: would this (wallpaper f.ex.) make it through moderation? I shouldn't upload sub par work just because I can.

I can fully understand how "the new guy" feels when he uploads a wallpaper for the first time here only to have it PPd. Then he goes to the gallery and sees what is accepted into the main gallery not realizing that some author's work is not moderated.

Please let it be known that I'm not thinking of anyone in particular. Just saying that I understand why there are so many posts titled "why doesn't my wallpaper show in the gallery" I even wrote one myself in 2006: https://forums.wincustomize.com/135590

I totally agree with you. But what happens when Journeyman posts something that the simplest apprentice would have  sent to his PPE page. I am not at all commenting on refused works, for I have had my share aplenty and have written one of those posts also. I eat my pill and try to better my work. I am talking about people who do not do as you explain. That is exactly my point. On top of it when you make comments, well, let's just say they are not well received. What recourse or options, do we, as citizens of the community have? I have seen all kinds of works, not just fractals that are just not a work even, but a Photoshop plug-in generated image. Like Flaming Pears Solar Cell. The greatest example is THE Scandal of which we do not speak. I think some will understand. I too, am not speaking of any one person because it is more than any one person. It is an attitude.

We do not have the right to question what art is or not. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder and the download counts will attest to that. Question what we will here, but people are downloading fractals.

So this would be where constructive criticism would come into play. Too many here are comment "whores" who say everything is good even if they hate it. I would prefer an honest comment anytime over false positive if the honest comment has merit. I have so many things that I have done, worn on my desktop a day or so and deleted because I did not think it was good enough. I certainly hope I am not uploading "shitty" work but if I am, I would prefer to know that, so I can try to improve. I agree it is not kosher to upload your experiments and learning exercises to the gallery just because you can. Somedays the gallery is just flooded with what I consider subpar. Perhaps some of you would group me into that class but I try to only submit my best, always highest pixel quality and resized to proper proportions and not just stretched or squished. I do try to self moderate but sometimes my judgement is skewed!

Forgive me for a slight diversion of the thread topic.  We have some very talented artists creating wallpapers and contributing to this thread.  For those of you who want to challenge yourself (ESPECIALLY if you're a Journeyman, as at that level your should be more than capable) and help out some of your fellow community members by doing so, please consider signing up for the Skinartistry 2 Steampunk Wallpaper Challenge in this thread: https://forums.wincustomize.com/383143/page/1/#replies

We are 2 members short of having enough participation.  You would be helping those of us who have signed up, and who really would like this thing to take place.

Thank you.

Karen, just to give you guys a good laugh, I guess I lead a pretty dull and sheltered life as I don't even know what a Steampunk is, so I guess I am not your one.

This statement is what we call "Hitting the nail on the head".  This place is a comment/karma whore gold mine.  It's been said I don't have a lot of social skills and that may be true.  But I say what I mean and I mean what I say.  If I don't like something, I'll tell you.  And if I tell you I like it, well, you can believe it.
