Stardock has pulled back the curtain on ImpulseTV, the latest major feature to come to the popular digital distribution platform, Impulse. Hosted by Jason Ocampo, formerly of IGN and Gamespot, and Brian Clair, formerly of Avault.com, ImpulseTV is designed to let people see games and software as they really are in order to get a better idea of whether they want to buy it or even try out the software. ImpulseTV features hands-on walk-throughs, game tutorials and tips, spotlights and demos on AAA and indie games alike, unbiased and outspoken expert commentary and more.

“There’s a lot of real gems out there that people would normally never hear about,” said Ocampo. “With ImpulseTV, we hope to shed some light on great games – both famous and unknown.”

Stardock continues its tradition of revolutionary digital download platform features with ImpulseTV, adding an innovative social networking aspect to the platform’s latest feature. ImpulseTV easily finds online friends with similar gaming tastes and fans will be able to view who has downloaded games featured on an episode of ImpulseTV, chat with them, participate in discussions stemming from each episode, or decide to purchase the game – all from the ImpulseTV episode screen.

With Impulse, users purchase their game and can then immediately download and install the game through the Impulse client which seamlessly manages updates, community features and more. Games become part of that user’s account such that when a user purchase a new machine, a user can simply re-download the Impulse client, logon to their account and re-download all their purchases, even years into the future.

Download Impulse at www.impulsedriven.com.

And it has to be flash for IE.

That's annoying.

I'me seing a new phrase - "pew pew" or something like that? Any idea what that means??

No idea who started it but its refering to shooting things (guns, phasers or lighting bolt in WoW) by the sound.

Pretty sure that originated from the "More pew pew, less QQ."  I.e. More fighting, less crying.

At the end of the day these are commercials, but they are enertaining and informative previews.

(...)

There are a lot of smaller games that would benefit greatly from a showcase like this.

Precisely. Overall, it's a wonderfully executed idea and a commendable effort.

And it worked.  I bought Spectromancer because of ImpulseTV.  But I bought it off of Steam because it was only $10 there.

I also get a black screen.  I have the latest version of Flash installed but I am running Windows 7 with the IE feature disabled.  How do I put Flash in a location that Impulse can find it?

on Feb 20, 2010

Fixed the black screen problem.  I didn't have Flash 10 installed for IE (since I don't have IE it wasn't installed when I installed Flash for Google Chrome.  You can download the IE only installer from the Adobe KB article here:

http://kb2.adobe.com/cps/191/tn_19166.html

Under the heading:

"If the ActiveX Control for Flash Player fails to install, download the executable installer."  In the link titled:

 Flash_Player_10_ActiveX

That links to the following file (I have included the above steps in case the link location changes):

I like this feature. Yeah it's an ad but It's nice to see the game in action and have features shown.

It's a nice concept with some potential but when I tried looking at one of the items it took a long time to load.  What was worse was that after a couple minutes it again loaded and took just as long, and again a couple of minutes later.  That's when I gave up.  Has anyone else had this problem?  I have never seen this kind of behavior from other streaming services (Youtube etc).

Would Stardock consider Silverlight or something other than Flash for ImpulseTV? Flash videos at high resolutions really eat up CPU cycles.

I didn't. Videos loaded fine for me and everything looked and sounded pretty good too.

Not a bad idea, advertising for lesser known games and PC exclusives that usually get none.  There's a lot of games out there that people would probably enjoy, but know nothing about and aren't willing to take a blind chance on.  With the big publishers seemingly getting more and more disinterested in porting to PC, this is the chance for others to shine.
