My current PC is well over two years old, and it’s definitely showing signs of age.  Trying out some recent game demos lately, and the computer basically laughed at me.  Not that I need the upgrade to use Windows 7, but it would be nice to have a new system anyways, so I decided to upgrade.  After cleaning out my office and selling a few things on eBay I didn’t need anymore, that funded most of this project.

I thought it would be interesting and fun to document the process of upgrading.

My current PC has:11-119-077-13

  • Cooler Master ATX case
  • 2.8Ghz Core2Duo Intel Processor
  • 2GB RAM
  • Nvidia 7600GT 256MB Video card
  • Biostar motherboard
  • DVD burner with Lightscribe
  • 250GB Hard Drive

I order the following from Newegg:

I also have a brand new ATI HD4850 Video card sitting here.

I’m going to keep the case, DVD burner, and hard drive.  I had the option of either getting a new hard drive and go with a cheaper processor, but I decided a new HD can wait another month or two due to budget.  When the new items arrive, I will take some pictures of the process.

People really need to invest more in cases... they shouldn't be the afterthought.  They're instrumental to overall system temperature!

It makes me sad that people feel their case has nothing to do with their computer.  It's almost as bad when people skimp on a mobo because they think it doesn't matter.

Antec makes numerous phenominal case designs.  The Skeleton the newest on the list, and the Antec 900 is a phenominal case STILL, years after release.

Don't skimp on your case with some flimsy PoS...

Lol I looked at the three parts you ordered and was gonna get angry at you for not upgrading that card,,, good thing I kept reading. But ew AMD processor

Whatever you do, ID, don't install the now non-existent Windowblinds 7 Beta! It will not work with Vista!!!  Or 7.  LOL

@CaesarsGhost:

I would hardly call that CoolerMaster a "flimsy PoS", it's decent for the price.  I have an Antec Nine Hundred myself, but I prefer some of Antec's other cases (I'd love to have a P193 one day).  Also, is there any reason to spend more than $100 on a motherboard?  Seems like a waste to me...

it seems the color of the heatsinks on the memory match the color of the motherboard.

This Cooler Master case has been great, and there is nothing flimsy about it.  I have kept it in excellent shape, and there's no reason to spend extra money on something that is in almost brand new condition.

In my recent build I used a CoolerMaster Centurion5 in blue, and I think it's a very sturdy, well ventilated case. I may add a side fan to it for summertime use,but with the mesh grill front, two side vents and two installed fans,it has no heat issues for now. It's roomy inside also so things aren't crowded (One 8800GT installed) My only beef is the usb ports on front are too close together, otherwise I'm happy with it.

Very similar to my recent upgrade (Phenom II 920, exact same RAM kit, MSI 790GX mobo, Radeon 4850). I'm very happy with it, really fast at everything and games run great (max settings). Well, besides Empire: TW, which runs almost great anyway. And should improve when it will finally support multicores. You have my approval

bastardo!...the pc your upgrading is better than the one I swear at daily.

With the upgrades you've mentioned, surely you gonna have a nice time on da upgraded machine

Very rite, have da same feeling for my 2 year old DELL notebook which still behaves as new as its very first day.

Depending on your mobo, you can probably get around a 30% overclock on your current CPU if you're willing to put in the time.  All you'd need to do is get a decent heatsink, and you can save some money and put off upgrading for another year.  I can recommend several guides if you're interested.

This. CPU's aren't anywhere close to cheap, but be sure you have a very nice fan.

Why want evryone a quad-core?

most softwares use only 2 cores-> so buy a dual core with 3 Ghz or more....

on Jun 07, 2009

Quad cores will triumph whenever people figure out a way to use the damned things.

Cheap fans are often surprising good compared to expensive ones.  Two $5 120mm fans and a $40 heatsink are all you need.
