Stardock is excited to announce the release of IconPackager 4.2 today.  IconPackager is an application that lets Windows users change the default icons to the thousands available for download.  IconPackager does this by applying “sets” of icon packs that can contain up to hundreds of icons.  IP also integrates into the Windows shell letting a user change specific icons by selecting the option through the right-click menu.

IconPackager on Windows Vista also takes advantage of the Live Folders feature, and can even apply a specific Live Folder icon set from the chosen icon pack.  Other features include the ability to recolor icon sets on the fly, and automatically upscale to larger size icons (Vista).

This update brings several updates and fixes, including:

  • Fix for x64 shell extension icon issue.
  • Live folder icons will prompt to restart explorer so they apply correctly.
  • Apply time should be quicker.
  • Language fixes for x64.

IconPackager is part of the Object Desktop suite of desktop enhancement, or available as a stand-alone application for Windows XP and Vista.

Installed the latest impulse tells me update available for iconpackager but when i click on update it tells me wait until impulse finishes update. It's the latest version installed i only just downloaded it. Down bottom left corner it says impulse update error. Why do i have to install this program, when all i want is the update for iconpackager. I only have iconpackager and objectdock. Will a download be available by a direct link sent by email like they use to as i cant see the point in installing programs you don't want or wont use.

Yeah, it worked but after it was done it said it was a 30 day trial! Then I looked in Impulse and by Icon packager it said Free. What the @#!?. I can't afford to buy it again right now! I feel like I was manipulated/cheated into buying IP again. I thought it was an update! Having said all that I'd just as soon go back to the 4.1 version rather than spend money I ain't got. So, can I revert to the old version without losing all my IP sets. I 've tweaked and collected a whole bunch. Again I feel cheated.

I backed up my IP's and went back to 3.2. I'm on xp, none of the Vista junk applies to this machine anyway. Ditto for x64. I feel that this 4.2 "update" that's not really an update wasn't handled very well here on WC. It should have been made clear that this was not just an update. Also the playing around with Impulse just to get anything about IP to show was pretty lame. Even now there is nothing showing in the Impulse version I have about IP. The version of IP, 3.2, I'm now using is not there. I knew how to get things back to "normal" but I'll bet there are some who will think they are updating only to find that in order to run 4.2 they have to re-purchase it and then in 30 days they are screwed if they don't. You have to be very careful un-installing and re-installing IP because you can mess up your icons. Before un-installing put the icons back to the default.

Maybe they should change the name from Impulse to Repulse as this program might be ok for people with Object Desktop but for someone who has only 2 programs its actually quite arrogant of Stardock to force people to install another application just to update software.

Regarding reply #18 or #19: No one from WC or Stardock got anything to say about these problems?

Chasbo, how long ago did you purchase IP?  What version?  Are you an ObjectDesktop subscriber?

Hi, I purchased IconPackager (standalone) in May 2008. I have been running without problems version 4.1, but when I update via impulse and install IP 4.2, it remains as trial (even though in Impulse appears as registered with my serial and my e-mail). Am I not entitled to update to version 4.2? Do we have to repurchase? As soon as I downgrade to IP 4.1 (via Stardock Central), everything gets normal again. I have tried to uninstall, reboot and reinstall via Impulse, but no way. Please, can you offer some solution? Vista 32 SP1 ultimate (spanish) Core Quad 6600 4GB RAM

Opus, this update is only available through Impulse at the moment.
Gee, that's real nice. I *still* cannot use Impulse from my work, and since I have been banned from the forums [Since Seabass locked my forum account after deciding that you didn't want to read about users who disagree with your software design principles, and have technical issues as well], can no longer post about my issues. I'll gladly post the info here... And, yes, I had my laptop home this morning and connected, ran Impulse and got the latest updates/version for it. But here at work, even with all proxy settings configured (and testing using multiple combinations of the settings), I cannot even connect/login, let alone download any updates.

I really would LOVE to move to Impulse, but I *still* don't see it as ready for prime time - i.e. anything but a BETA product.
