Major free update for players of the Dark Avatar and Twilight expansion packs
Published on November 5, 2008 By Island Dog In GalCiv II News

Stardock has released a major free update to its award-winning PC strategy game, Galactic Civilizations II. The update adds a host of new features to its latest expansion pack Twilight of the Arnor as well as expands on features found in the Dark Avatar expansion pack.

Galactic Civilizations II was originally released in 2006 and won numerous PC game awards including “Turn-based Strategy Game of the Year from GameSpy”. In 2007 the first expansion pack, Dark Avatar was released and became the highest-rated expansion pack of all time according to Metacritic. This year, the second expansion pack, Twilight of the Arnor was released and surpassed Dark Avatar in ratings and sales.

Version 2.0 has been developed as a major free update, primarily for Twilight of the Arnor, to help integrate the expansion packs together with the original into a single consolidated experience.

New features include but are not limited to:

  • Players can now design new starships from the main game menu
  • All game campaigns have been updated to be playable within Twilight of the Arnor
  • New user manual
  • Numerous new game setup options
  • Updated diplomatic options
  • New planetary governors for automating the building of planets
  • Revamped espionage system
  • Auto-building for starbases
  • Balance updating
  • Improved graphics

Since its release, Galactic Civilizations II has sold over 300,000 copies worldwide, making it one of the best-selling PC turn-based strategy games of all time and has built a significant player base amongst strategy gamers, modders and sci-fi fans.

Players can download the update via Impulse (www.impulsedriven.com), Stardock’s digital distribution platform that enables users to purchase, download and update hundreds of different PC games and applications.

Players can get the entire Galactic Civilizations II saga at their local retail outlet or direct from Stardock at www.galciv2.com.

The Arnorian ship style is not included because we ran out of time.

Aww... that's too bad. Any chance we get it later?

Wonderful.

Thx for patch Stardock!

As I said in another thread, if for some reason you can't install Impulse (you have Win98 or Win2k), we can probably work something out with support, but it may take a week or so to make sure that we don't need to put up another update due to something that didn't come up in the beta.

That would be great. As a Win2k user, I'd really love to be able to use Stardock Central to get GalCiv 2.0. I'm not opposed to upgrading my OS and using Impulse ("Elemental" looks like a good reason to do that eventually), it's just that at the moment I'd like to spend my spare time playing a game rather than updating my OS, getting informed about Impulse, and getting everything to work. With Stardock Central, I know that I just have to click three times to update my game. I absolutely don't mind waiting another week for GC 2.0 to arrive on SDC.

Then my suggestion is to update your OS. You're really not doing yourself any favors by sticking with Win2k.

Funny thing. I just ran the update again, and this time it didn't ask to uninstall?

Btw. I still have win2k on two computers (+2 XP, 2 Vista and 1 Linux) - there simply is no reason to upgrade those two. And if there are games on Impulse that run on 2k, then Impulse itself also has to support 2k. Simple as that.

Quoting YiddoBobbins, reply 8What is it with gamers these days and the insistence of 'I should get everything I want and how I want it'? Drives me mad.

Many paying software users "these days" feel bullied, cheated, channeled, and manipulated by the software industry. Rest easy that this only drives you mad, for others it's driven them to piracy. I guess that's just the way it is.

OK, it's a while since I've been on the forums and I was expecting the update to be available via SDC. Last time I was here everyone was complaining about Impulse buggering up their computers. I think it's a legitimate concern to be worried about having to install something so disruptive before I can play the game. If I can get assurance that all these problems are fixed and that Impulse will be as inoffensive as SDC then I'll download it with no complaint, but if after all this time Impulse is still computer-wreckingly dysfunctional then I will be annoyed (and yes, probably feel bullied & cheated) that Stardock expect me to use it.

I have the GC II Endless Universe retail version. Is there any way to register is on Impulse? It is bot available in the add registrations games list(I also have Dreadlords as a separate install). Clicking on 'Update' does open Impulse, but it just tells me there aren't any updates...

So far, v2 is working great! The only suggestions I have relate to the minimization of mouse movement. It would be nice if there were keyboard shortcuts in the Colonies Tab of the Civilization Manager. It can be a tad hard on the wrist to rush-buy improvements on 100+ planets, especially when done several turns in a row.

I would also be thrilled beyond measure if it were possible to select multiple planets and add a Planetary Goveror to all of them at once, and would very much like to be able to assign the governor from the Colony Management screen instead of the Planet Details screen.

That's my impression too.  With a high-resolution display the colony manager could easily take a third column.  In low res, you could switch or scroll to a view which shows which governors are in effect.

I guess that if governors had been introduced way back in Dread Lords, they would have been way more integrated into the interface that exists now.

This looks so sweet... i'm downloading it now can't wait to play it!

1 - You don't - this is a free update which Stardock have bothered producing to show appreication for their customers. The game still plays brilliantly without 2.0, so you catagorically do not have to install something 'disruptive' to play the game.

2 - It's not 'computer-wreckingly dysfunctional'. Not only have I had no problems and neither have either of my two friends who I know have it installed, but so you're simply insulting the company to accuse them of releasing such a product.

I don't care that people didn't understand my last post, I am still getting driven mad by gamers who feel it is their unalienable right to moan, complain and generally bitch about anything and everything they can. My original point stands - this is a free update, say 'thankyou' and stop complaining.

I honestly wonder why Stardock actually bother being so player-friendly sometimes, it seems they get nothing but grief for it. Release a series of great games with no copy protection, no cd requirement and no DRM? We'll moan about the delivery system! Release a free update which you don't have to but work on for hours and at cost in order to say thanks to customers - never fear, they'll complain that you didn't put in certain ship designs!

Show some appreciation and grow up, some of you.

I'm a little confused as to what "Endless Universe" is? I thought it was the European release of GalCiv and ALL the expansions. Does it not include Dreadlords then?

Yep. It is a standalone version of Dark Avatar and Twilight without DreadLords.

I have EU and still cannot register it on Impluse so cannot see whether the update is available.

rlGoma
i have the EU and cant register the game too

OK, someone tell me straight and in no uncertain terms: if I buy EU, will I be able to update it to 2.0?

Mine updated to 2.0 from Impulse, but the registering didn't work. So I downloaded and registered TA from Stardock Central, and then updated the game to 2.0 from Impulse. Then it works.
