Or any of the candidates for that matter
Published on April 6, 2008 By Island Dog In Democrat

I had an Obama supporer recently tell me that Obama is the only candidate who can "unite" America.  When asked specifically how Obama will "unite" us, they went off on the usual Obama rhetoric without giving any specifics, just that "Obama is great".

No candidate in the '08 Presidential Election will unite the country.....none.  Obama can't even unite the democratic party behind him, much less the overwhelming majority of America.  The United States has two major idealogies going on, each with it varying degrees of extremism and mix of more independant minded voters.  The real problem is, Obama, nor any of the candidates, can really do anything to change that.

People on the left want a more socialist state, where government takes care of pretty much every aspect of your life.  Obama specifically wants government healthcare, restricted gun rights, more regulated business, etc.  Nothing he will ever do will convince a great part of America that those ideas are good for America.  On the same token, it can also be said that a great part of America would not be behind McCain because he supports winning in Iraq, and lower taxes.

With near impossiblity of a real third party candidate even getting near a majority, we have to work with what we got.  Unfortunately, there isn't much to work with, with the two party system we have here now.  With the exception of breaking the country off into two, I really don't see how this country will ever really be "united".

Unfortunately, true. The left has shown that even their candidate will not do it. WHoever is elected is going to half of them pissed off before taking office.

Are the left totally deluded?

Do they honestly think that a candidate to the left of Hillary can somehow "unite" a population that centers somewhere right of Hillary?

I think they exhibit a messiah syndrome.

A messiah syndrome describes a situation where someone sees a "saviour" and then starts assigning all possible positive roles to him, regardless of his actual actions (or whether he even has the ability or will to do those things).

Actually, Obama's more moderate than Clinton if you look at his positions on the issues.

I don't know any of his positions. He hasn't done anything. He said a few things, but he also said that he now disagrees with the pastor he has just a year ago declared his mentor.

Whatever positions he claims to have, I don't know if they are his until I see him do something about it. And for that he never had the time.

And you don't have to be the president of the US to do stuff.

That's true. These days, being a fiscal conservative puts you left of center.

Nobody can unite America. If they can, we lose our freedom. The point is that they unite the majority of America, and we learn from any mistakes made. I wanted Huckabee.

You don't know any of his positions and yet you were one post earlier lying about how you know he won't unite the country.

What a way to avoid reality there.

Talk is hot air. Actions are deeds. You dont have to know his positions to state an opinion on actions. By your rules, we have to muzzle Hillary and Obama.

Come to think of it, that is not a bad idea.

You mean like Bush's actions of willfully murdering thousands of US soldiers on what could only be described as specious unproven lies in order to start a war where his warmongering psychotic brethren could profit?

The current regime occupying the White House and their followers are nothing more that immoral criminal psychotics.
